Likkrit: "We are winning because we deserve it"

Riot··2 votes·25,167 views

It’s a fluke. They were underestimated. Over-aggressive. These are the excuses that flood discussions when an International Wildcard team pulls off an upset. The floods this year, though -- they are more frequent. And more violent.

On Day 1 of Worlds when Albus NoX Luna stormed out to an early lead against the ROX Tigers, fans and pundits thought it was cute -- like a feisty cat taking its free shots against the Tigers. Maybe it was nerves. Maybe ANX was a little better than credited. But their performance was quickly shrugged off.

And then INTZ stunned EDG. Suddenly, people took notice of the International Wildcard as more than just a nod to the breadth of League of Legends.

Counter Logic Gaming entered Day 3 with the chance to go up 2-0 in the group and secure a winning record for the first weekend. ANX, though, was seen as a trap game. CLG is famous for boneheaded losses, and losses to Wildcard teams wouldn’t be anything new for them. And again, they have found themselves on the wrong end of a Wildcard team.

ANX played a poke composition to perfection thanks to wild plays on Tahm Kench from their support, Kirill “Likkrit” Malofeev. He was everywhere on the map as he seemed to use his ultimate the second it was off cooldown. And for Likkrit, this win wasn’t a fluke -- he even expected it.

“People still think Wildcard regions are nothing,” he says. “But as for my team? My team is a team full of all-star players in our region. We literally can’t take anybody else to improve. So don’t underestimate the Wildcard region. Wildcard regions can do well. And if our friends Dark Passage were here, they would show you the same stuff we did.”

The International Wildcard Qualifier took place last month and featured an array of teams from non-major regions across the World. Likkrit thinks the level of competition between the IWCQ’s top teams is comparable to the level at Worlds.

He says, “The thing is that actually, if we didn’t get ROX Tigers in our group, it wouldn’t be harder than the IWCQ at its best. This Wildcard was spoiled because DP came in with two subs. But even with two subs, they got top four. If they came in at their best shape, we would have had four teams which could contend at Worlds.”

He wished they could have proved it against ROX, though, saying, “I was really upset about the loss. We could have actually won. People would have known a team from Wildcard that was supposed to be the No. 16 seed could win against the [perceived] No. 1.”

The journey to their upset is remarkable, though. While every other region traveled to Korea to bootcamp, ANX simply didn’t have the same luxury. Based on comments made by their fellow Wildcard competitor INTZ, even if they’d made it there, acquiring scrims would have been difficult -- if not impossible.

He laughs and says, “Thank you to INTZ e-Sports for being our scrim partners since June.

“No one wants to play with us. People think Wildcard regions are weak and that wins like these only happen because of Best of 1 or teams being over aggressive or underprepared. No, they are not. We are winning because we deserve it."

He continued, "If you get a lead like we did against ROX Tigers, but in one moment they just outclass you -- you lose. Versus CLG, everyone could see that we are actually teams of the same level. People don’t scrim us but we don’t care because you can improve not only as players but as people -- as teammates.”

The World Championship is a massive opportunity for a lot of teams. For some, it’s about trying to redeem their past failures. They aim to meet their expectations. But all of them -- from the top of the Korean pantheon to the new international challengers -- are there to justify the year’s work.

And for ANX, it’s not a life of luxury. Likkrit says, “In terms of money, we’re not supposed to be here. Even for the Wildcard region, we are extremely poor. It’s better than it used to be. We don’t need help, but we just need attention. I can’t even explain how poor our region is.”

However, he says Russians, like Americans, value winners. So their success is sure to turn the heads of larger organizations that’ve looked elsewhere for investment. And while they might not have the same amount of fans as some of their more established international counterparts, they’ve still got the ones that matter.

“The biggest fans of me are my grandmothers,” he says. “They really watch our games -- they don’t actually understand a lot, but they just root for me. And it’s a really big deal because you know, your family being behind you is like -- it’s hard to explain how important it is -- but everyone who has ever had problems with his team supporting him will understand me. Family is everything.”

That he was able to stand on stage and address millions of spectators is a far cry from where Likkrit spent the majority of the year. But it must have been a special moment for his home and his family. Just as it was special for the numerous players who dare to dream of standing on the greatest League of Legends stage in the world. But the moment was special for another reason -- that he opened the interview with an apology for his manners in the loss to ROX Tigers says everything about his demeanor. Everything about who he is as a person.

There’s a saying in Russia, he says, "If you want to know what a person is truly like, you have to see them go through three obstacles: fire, water, and fame. Fame is the hardest thing to overcome. Sometimes people forget that they are people. Not just characters who are famous. You always need to remain a person -- you aren’t special. Yes, I won. Yes, millions of people watched me win against CLG, but I’m just a person. Just like anyone else.”

The thing is. He explains well WHY he's being cocky. How much are Chinese teams spending preparing their players? On coaching staff, support staff, Team houses, Glorified training vacations? NA teams, same story. EU, I assume the same is true. They don't get that. He mentions that other regions won't scrim them and there's really no other way for them to compete against the teams they're EXPECTED to challenge prior to the games where they are seemingly purposefully set up (by Riot) as a punching bag to make the weaker EU/NA/LMS feel good about themselves when they get crushed by the top 1-4 teams that typically outclass the competition. They have literally no real way to prepare for the world stage... while the main teams have their "boot camps" where they rush desperately to scrim against the teams they will be facing and other competitive teams from the region they all look up to as the LoL big leagues. Still: ANL (briefly) outclassed the #1 team in the world. INTZ flat out outclassed the expected #2 team in the world, despite all this.

I'm reminded of the "Discuss" page in the "These are your worlds teams" article... full of people saying that the wildcard teams should be kicked so that IMT could attend, because the wildcard teams can't compete. Yeah, I wanted IMT to be here too. Sadly they are choketastic in Finals so they didn't make it. I'll bet it's the same guys who said that who are now the ones calling a team that they dismissed poor sports for saying that they deserved their win.

NoobGoesBoom2 votes

Forgot to mention, how many Korean import players does their region have? How many do the other regions have? They don't get to buy talent the way other regions try (and sometimes succeed) to. Let's be honest; IMT didn't almost get here because of how amazing their NA players were. They almost got here because Huni/Reign. Who got bought by EU to make FNC qualify... who then sold them to NA to almost get IMT to qualify. Call a spade a spade. Most of the competitive teams not only use Korea as a training ground, a source for game/meta/strategy developments... but flat out a source of talent directly in the players. You have one region that very clearly dominates the competitive scene. Three regions who are favored enough they can afford to buy/steal from that region until they're 'almost' competitive; and finally everyone else who have to play on the level playing field below those four. Yeah, they deserve to be a little cocky when they do something that I really doubt any NA, EU, or LPL team could have if they were put in the same situation.

I really don't know much/anything about LMS situation, but it may be in either boat.

If EU spent as much money on their teams as they do on vacations they might compete.

Eleshakai1 votes

Now now. Riot doesn't set them up. Riot can't enforce scrim partners, and shouldn't be providing money for boot camps/etc. Given that Riot can't provide that stuff... it's up to them to secure it.

Riot is giving them the opportunity to play against these teams. This is something most of these teams would've never gotten if not for worlds/MSI. It's a fantastic opportunity for them, and I'm glad to see that over the years they've been gradually improving and are now on the verge of being able to really compete.

Anime90011 votes

I can agree with most of this, although I'd like to toss my 2 cents for 2 things. First, I don't really think there's a much better way for Riot to make things fairer for the wildcard regions. At least, I don't think Riot is going out of their way to make them a punching bag. I think changing the rules for MSI (allowing teams to take each others' seeds) was one of the few things they could do to help them (and that was a change that really needed to be done). The only other thing I can think that Riot could do to "help" the wildcard teams would be to have more slots for them at worlds, but that still doesn't stop them from being punching bags. Riot just sorta form the outer shell of the esports scene for League and the organizations and such take care of the rest. I mean, there's not really a way for Riot to force the teams to scrim against one another. And honestly, being a punching bag helps you learn how to throw those punches yourselves. There's a reason why the Wildcard regions have gotten better every single year. Sure, being a punching bag in scrims would be better and quicker, but you can't really force it. At least, that's my opinion.

And my other albeit smaller note is that if any region deserves a fourth seed it's Korea. Or Flash Wolves/AHQ's region should get a third. The latter to put them on even ground with the other major regions and the former because a fourth seed form Korea would still probably be stronger than half of the competition most years. Now, I'm not saying they should take one of the Wildcard slots for it or anything, but there's no reason why NA should be first in line to receive it. And that's coming from someone who directly wants Korea to lose every year.

They win one game against a team that is arguably NA's weakest team and they're bringing out the "We are winning because we deserve it"? Not to mention the lack of sportsmanship after they lose. The cockiest team at worlds right now. I hope they lose the next 4 games.

VMystikage2 votes

Agreed. You never talk big or act cocky before any action. This is worlds we're talking about here, and only still in group stages. CLG is the fourth best NA team in my opinion (they're just not consistent enough), behind TSM/C9/Immortals. They beat a fourth place NA team they played extremely poor and won, good for them. Doesn't make them 'good' or 'better' in any way. I still think CLG is a better team than NOX overall, they just need to get their act together. Saying, "we are winning because we deserve it" is a bit like a small kid trying too hard to be noticed.

Yeah, too bad for the points thing. CLG really is 4th best in NA at the moment.

TromboneNovowels3 votes

IMT cracks under pressure. They can't pull off any wins that matter. No, I do not want them at worlds. No, CLG isn't the best team and I don't think they can win past quarter finals. But I hope they can make it out of group stage and prove me wrong, by showing they deserve some credit.

Yxgl222HaX2 votes

Yeah i do believe that's a fair enough assesment, i also dont really like adrians severly limited pool hes only really known for soraka while at least aphro can play bard and ali pretty well. Neither clg or imt would be my choices to rep NA at worlds but mabye if you cannibalized the two teams, stixxay and aphro+ reignover and pobelter. Not that much diffrence in top laners everyone knows huni tilts hard af, but clg's top makes alot of dumb choices too. All in all if i had to place my faith in an Na team, my moneys on C9 or TSM. C9 looking kinda shaky right now but if they almost always do something at worlds worth watching. One year its the c9-kabum thing, next year its the 3-0 coming out of 7th place in split in week one, mabye this year they will do something no one expects too and take first in their group after dying to gromp at 60 mins. who knows lol. Mabye jensen will have his rematch aginst faker and win, anything can happen

Why can't I respond to any posts past mine... Lol well, fair enough I guess. But like mentioned before, IMT hasn't won an LCS semifinal. In terms of consistency, this CLG roster has CONSISTENTLY surprised (in a good way) at the international stage. I personally feel like they perform better under pressure. Both cases, IMT and CLG, are not ideal but I'd still rather have CLG over IMT.

Well you're wrong here. Given that immortals is incapable of dealing with teams that are as strong as them, I don't want them competing internationally. Immortals are the type of team you love to root for at home, but would be really ashamed of at Worlds. They've never been able to deal with teams that can stand toe to toe with them. But they look so good against weaker teams, which makes them fun to watch in the NALCS since there are so many weaker teams...

All in all they've beaten TSM this year, they've beaten C9 this year, and they've beaten CLG this year all teams as strong as them. They've also lost to all those teams this year. Nobody wins em all.

CLG got hot in the spring playoffs and held on enough in the summer playoffs to accumulate more points even though Immortals handled them for third place in the summer.
C9 got hot in the summer playoffs and qualifier and took advantage. That is why they are there and Immortals are not.
But to say Immortals can't handle teams equal to them runs counter to reality. Not only can they, they have.

They've beaten teams that BECAME strong before those teams became strong.

TSM in Spring was an awful team except during the playoffs. C9 before playoffs looked like a shadow of their former selves. I still liked C9 during that time, but as a fan I had to acknowledge that they looked like they had no synergy - they looked AWFUL.

Immortals has not beaten a team that was of roughly equal strength to them ever. They have beaten teams who later became strong, but once those teams became strong, Immortals looked awful against them.

Immortals really has a problem - they seem to crumple when a team rputs up even a token resistance against them. They just look like they don't know what to do and they get desperate. I like Immortals as a team, but they're not the type of team that would do well at Worlds as they play now. I hope they aren't as in denial about their weakness as you are... because if they keep denying it, they'll never fix t.

So when immortals wins, it's because the other team was awful. When the other team wins, it's because immortals cant handle teams equal to them. You're completely distorting reality to fit your smack talking meme. Nothing more.
The fact is, anyone can say the same exact thing about any team that loses at any time. Yeah they were good, but now they suck. Or they sucked but then they got good. That's nothing but smack talk. Not reality. The simple reality is TSM, CLG, c9, and immortals are all good clubs and they have beaten each other quite a bit this year. They're all better than anyone from EU except G2 and maybe better than them too. But one of em had to be the odd team out because only three could go. People can always say a team lost because they sucked to fit their smack talk agenda. In fact, it frequently happens among college football conference fanboys. Before the game. The SEC is going to pound you. You don't know what an SEC team can do.
After the game Win. See I told you so. Lose. Well that team sucked. They're going to get last place in the conference. Their right guard had a bum knee. Etc, etc, excuse excuse excuse.
Again the reality is they have indeed beaten teams equal in strength to them whether you choose to believe in reality or not.

No, those teams looked awful AND Immortals beat them. The two are not related. They looked awful against teams other than Immortals too.

You're just trying to twist what I'm saying to suit an agenda you have. I get it. But it's wrong.

TSM looked awful for ALL of their games around the time that Immortals beat them. When TSM shaped up, they started wrecking Immortals(and everyone else, mind you). C9 looked awful for ALL of their games around the time that Immortals beat them. CLG struggled the entire summer split. Some people are surprised CLG made it to the playoffs at all with how bad their summer was.

I'm not trying to smacktalk Immortals. I like Immortals. They're an INCREDIBLY fun team to watch locally. I just recognize that they seem to crumple when actually stood up to. They need to fix that if they want to be able to win a split like they feel they deserve to.... but until they fix that, I don't want to see them internationally, as much as I love watching them locally.

Blind Minion1 votes

The most informed people have observed the season as Eleshakai has. Immortals opponents looked pretty bad during the regular season regardless of their opposition.

As far as I can tell Immortals is like first season C9. So dominant against opponents weaker than they because no team can capitalize upon their small mistakes. Then season 2 C9 shows up with opposition and can't replicate their early success.

Immortals consistently play to solos or duos and are strong because of individual play, regardless of their draft phase. They can afford to do that because of their immense skill pool but not necessarily because of their great team work or picks; though eventually a team with superior teamwork and champion synergy dismantles them.

You can't attack Likkrit's argument because of his and his team's attitude. Likkrit makes a legitimate point and you can't ignore it just because he's..... toxic. He makes a legitimate and true point that not many people care about his region. Up to this point, the Wildcard region is doing better than EU. Yet everyone still sees them as the "cute" region that can only "cheese" their way out of games. And why is the phrase, "We are winning because we deserve it" so offensive to you? How does that mean that they are the cockiest team at worlds. Literally ANY team that has a win deserves to say that. Even if you don't perform well and win, you deserve the win because you still performed well enough to capitalize on enemy mistakes. (In other words, the enemy deserved a loss, therefore you deserve the win.) You made 0 valid points for your claim of why they are the cockiest team at worlds. Now here is the claim I will make: the fact that the Wildcard region, which you ranked as trash, is doing well DARES to question your obvious superior ability to analyze the game. Therefore you think that their complaint that they don't receive the respect that they CLEARLY DESERVE, is unwarranted (because they're bad) and just them being the "cockiest team at worlds right now."

Not sure if this guy is being serious or not. The only way a team wins games is buy deserving the win. You can say that clg is NA worst team and you could say that they played bad or what ever you want but the fact is that even if all this was true NOX had to capitalize on there mistakes. So saying that they are being cocky buy stating they deserved the win vs clg is ridiculous. All there doing is shutting up the haters that think it's just luck.

I was hoping that CLG would perform like they did at MSI. And so far, they have. Jatt said it perfectly yesterday when he noted that CLG loses the games that they're supposed to win, and often pull huge upsets. CLG lost to SuperMassive, but still made it to the finals of MSI. This is the CLG we know and don't necessarily love, but have mixed feelings about.
