The fall of assassins in pro play

Riot··10 votes·121,369 views
There was a time when the simple act of running across Summoner’s Rift didn’t go unpunished. If you held the title of “carry,” every second you spent unattended could leave you behind the wrong end of a sharp blade. One well-timed combo, even amidst heated combat, from a lurking Zed or Fizz and it’s lights out for anyone on the hit list. The past were the days assassins reigned supreme and carries quivered in fear at the sight of them. Now you have tanks in more positions on the map and with it, a greater amount of crowd control to consider when going for a kill. With the recent changes to the game’s meta--bruisers taking Smite top and Cinderhulk popularizing tank junglers--silent, burst killers have to climb too many walls before fatally wounding any target. Nicolaj “Incarnati0n” Jensen agrees assassins have seen better days. “I think assassins are in a kind of weird place right now,” Incarnati0n says. “They are not the strongest champions because there are too many tanks. The point of an assassin is to, well, assassinate someone, obviously. But you can't really do that anymore.” The added protection popular champions like Sion and Sejuani have to offer make the life of an assassin far too difficult in 5v5 scenarios. Many go in deep to take out the VIP, few come out alive. Often, they are just laced with crowd control and picked off before accomplishing their mission.

A league without shadows

Assassins have one goal: burst down a high-priority carry before they can react. In the past, this tactic was fully viable as it became a matter of which team’s assassin snowballed harder after laning and roamed more efficiently. But now, tanks that have enough cc to shutdown the average assassin are going into the midlane more often, usually joined together by a top lane and jungler equally tanky. It’s still feasible to run an assassin, but you’d be hard-pressed to nail your target before being cc’d to death by three tanks in a teamfight. Even Heo "PawN" Won-seok, a player known for his assassin play, acknowledges the current meta doesn’t entirely favor his style. “Based on the current patch and meta, I think for mid lane champions, those who are better at farming are better when you get into team fights,” PawN says. Incarnati0n shares PawN’s sentiments, “If [assassins] don't win lane, they're kind of going to fall off and get out scaled by the other champions. Especially in this tank meta, you can't really kill anyone. You don't really have much of a job to do.” Currently, the meta favors a strong 5v5 team fighting composition. With a strong Teleport presence from a tanky top lane bruiser and a reliance on extended fights to secure objectives, reliable mid-game/late-game power spikes to gain control during certain points of a match are much more valuable. Taking a chance on the possibility of a laning phase snowball is just too much of a gamble if the flow of the game doesn’t go according to plan. Placing a mage like Ziggs or Orianna, whom provide sustained poke and additional crowd control, in the middle lane secures a decent mid-game through safe farming. Assassins in-lane must go for the kill when able, even to their own detriment, and use that pressure to strike fear into their opponents. A high risk, high reward plan when played out well is great, but when there’s a lot on the line in a pro level match, the “better safe than sorry” option is just too hard to pass-up. With Cinderhulk in the mix, the jungle is typically reserved for beefy, cc-orientated tanks; most of which can apply early pressure to a lane and thwart an assassin's plans to get ahead early. At the moment, there isn’t a place to properly fit an assassin without first building around them. “I think in the current patch assassin champions are not good in team fights. They can only play with full on split pushing or 1-3-1 split pushing,” PawN says.

“You just have to be patient…”

Despite the resurgence of tanks and strong, early game control from junglers like Nunu and Gragas, Incarnati0n claims there’s still hope for those who lurk in shadows. If an assassin does manage to snowball even against a team looking to shut them down, they still play a vital role. The opposition won’t want to push out as far due to fear, leaving the assassin to choose his next victim in other parts of the map. Essentially, the kill pressure gives your team map control. “You just have to be patient,” Incarnati0n says. “You just need to not go in instantly, and wait for your teammates to go in first. Then you can try to go in. You should not engage with your ultimate, either. If you're Zed, you should try to go in with your W first and get some damage in. Use your spells. Get your full rotation off before you use your ultimate to kill someone. You just need to be patient because you can't really kill the tanks.” Simply being patient is the key to playing an assassin effectively. Using what poke you do have is vital to ensure you can 100 to 0 someone in the blink of an eye when the time comes to strike. With that, Incarnati0n does favor particular assassins over others likely due to their ability to easily escape a sticky situation. “Zed is fine,” Incarnti0n says. “Once you get your items, he's actually alright. I [also] think Fizz right now is in a fight spot, actually. You just need to overcome his weaker laning phase. If you build full cooldown reduction, then I think he's fine because he's very mobile and can't really die. You just need to go for the squishy targets.” Still, even with viable assassin picks in the current meta, it’s difficult for Cloud 9’s new midlaner to justify picking an assassin into some of the popular solo lane picks. “I would not pick an assassin into Cho'Gath or Urgot, for sure,” he says. Both picks are just too tanky to cut through and have kits that stop a full on dive in its tracks. Going in for the kill? There’s nothing like a tasty, silenced assassin Feast. As new patches are released and the Cinderhulk meta slowly drifts away, do you think assassins will make a big come back in matches to come? For those who enjoy the feeling of annihilating a carry into extinction in one fowl swoop, who are you favorite assassins and how do you overcome the wall of tanks that plagues the Rift in this day and age?

Yeah man, because the people who write articles totally control who gets nerfed right?

Well, yes, actually.

The "people" who write the articles here at lolesports are hired lolesports journalists. They have no affiliation with Riot Staff, and therefore no control over who gets nerfed and who gets buffed. Yes, they are writing about Riot's game and the professional scene in it, and might occasionally speak to Riot Staff, but they are not influenced by Riot's agendas and are not the ones behind skins, champ balancing, etc. Tired of these journalists getting bushwhacked for something they can't control. They're trying to be informative, offering us a great view into the League of Legends professional scene - and they do a pretty good job of it.

Wrong, nerfs the shit out of all assassins, buffs the shit out of all tanks, then writes an article titled the fall of assassins

He's going to be insanely strong and people will beg for nerfs simply because he'll be the only assassin still able to do the job of actually killing people.

I agree! Assassins are extremely fun to watch! It's cool to see a player bold enough to dip through all the cc, take someone out, and just mindgame back to safety.

more like a tickleattack ;) the problem is by no means the dmg aura. its the %life. tanks that don't need to rely on ad/ap just go full HP and tank the shit our of everything. i played sejuani jungle, went full HP+Cinderhulk and i just wrecked ppl 1v3. (every game btw) couldn't dream off doing this that easyly with my main. nuff' said...

For anyone who says that assassins are in a bad place right now you need to learn how to build vs tanksitem 3153 item 3142 item 3035 item 3071 gg you just deleted a tank in a second well done now pat yourself on the back

TM 9954 votes

Oh yeah AD LEBLANCE FTW!

Ignite Ryuzaki7 votes

Leblanc good roaming can pick up kills in early game so easy also has 2 flashes on a short cool down and a clone making her hard to catch. Tanks really bad early games average mid games if they got help in early (and they don't half the time) and good late as a Leblanc just roam and 2 shot every non tank also league is a team game so if your trying to solo a tank then you playing it wrong and if your focusing a tank then expect there carries to delete you

Ignite Ryuzaki2 votes

also 90% of games now end by the 20th min so no time to get full build on a tank meaning there viability is low unless the game is very drawn out

52768598_DEL4 votes

WTF, almost all games arrive to lategame due to nobody dealing damage

Awaki Sakume4 votes

...You basically just explained Leblanc's kit without any real direction at the actual comment. Also, there are certain champs Gnar Vayne who can actually solo tanks with relatively little effort. I personally will focus the heaviest tank in a fight if there's enough damage on my team elsewhere for me to afford it. I don't argue that this is a good idea, by any means, but in most of those situations I wouldn't be able to reach the back line before it explodes due to the rest of my team. I find that it's actually easier for THEM to do things if I delete the tank, regardless of whether my job is supposed to be getting into the backline right alongside them.

mkmuffen36 votes

good job you spent the entire time focusing the tank while the adc just shit on you

LukaLuna6 votes

Zed can kill an ADC with that build no problem, that was standard most of the time before tank metas came in actually.

Lafouboy21 votes

Assassins got stomped out of viability at the beginning of the season, with all of the nerfs to every assassin. A few assassins are still viable, like Leblanc, but most of them cannot solo carry anymore (look at Leblanc's winrate).

Tarkamacska67 votes

most of them cannot solo carry anymore

This is the greatest thing. The better team should win, not the best player.

Axers25 votes

Yeah thats really good for solo queue ... am i right ?

DuctTapeMeansYes51 votes

Yep, it is, because league is a team game.

Lemilion23 votes

So, are u obliged to lose 10 games in a row because u didn't get a good team ? It is solo queue and i think team work is important, but you must still be able to carry yourself to victory. Thats why i hate that tank meta ! I really like assassins and i feel like i can't do anything myself after laning phase.

Dr Smokey27 votes

Carry yourself to victory by working with your team dude (if u loose 10 games in row the problem comes from within mate)

Needsnaming16 votes

Exactly, I win most games by rushing a sight stone. I don't need to be 50/1/0 to win a match. I just need to buy some wards and we win.

and for the guy who says he lost 32 games in a row without changing anything. Its called learning to adapt to others. If you do not change your play style, how can you expect to win. Everything has its place and everything is fluid. You lost because you did not adapt. You lost because you did not try to be better, you thought you were good enough, and the world moved on and showed you your true place.

Gladiator Cloudz5 votes

True that, i actually had a 38-10-11 Lb on my 2nd acc, i was full build at like 30 mins but lost the game

BloodyMace21 votes

We all lose games like those! Even an adc has the same outlook on how difficult it is to carry a team with a bad strategy. People forget that this isn't a first person shooter where you go in like rambo and try to make plays. This has a strategy to it, many, especially low elo people, can't comprehend how important it is.

Dr Smokey5 votes

smart man (woman?) here !

Flaco13 votes

I agree I am in the lower elo but climbing fast, and its ridiculous how many people go for the kills over free objectives.

Assassins Meta= most fun to play and most fun to watch Meta ever Tank Meta= most boring to play and most not entertaining to watch Meta ever Riot Plz give us back assassins and burster

Biffolo47 votes

Speak for yourself, it's by far the healthiest in terms of game balance. Right now pretty much any role is viable, albeit assasins are a tad weak atm. Some people also find tanks to be fun.

GaKgAkGaK21 votes

i agree, when assassins roamed free it was ballshit being that adc with an enemy fizz or zed or any assassin really, just knowing anywhere you go you will die unless the mighty divine have mercy on your soul.

But then again there is not really any fun being an adc vs 3 tanks with thorn mail either so it is a moo point. At least in this meta every role has its place unlike previous seasons such as the assassin one.

Discord Jester9 votes

Because having unkillable tanks is so much more healthy for ADC. By far.

RR Zero6 votes

Assassins and tanks both are really annoying to me as an ADC main. If a Volibear or Malphite with thornmail catches you in a 1v1, he can completely duel you with no problem. If Zed catches you out in a 1v1, you're probably going to die lol

SquirrellyOtter23 votes

I would prefer the tank meta over the assassin meta any day of the week, because tanks can't delete you like Zed or LeBlanc or Akali. Trade is, that you have longer fights, you need that Last Whisper or Black Cleaver much faster, and you need to be aware of the CC that tanks typically possess.

I think if Riot increased either the passive gold generation or minion gold, we wouldn't see the mid-game stallouts. We're seeing the stalls because a LOT of gold is off the table: dragons don't give global gold, inhib towers are massively reduced, and jungle creeps have longer respawns AND are less efficient for non-junglers (as I think they should be). There isn't the income to support getting teams to even half-complete builds by midgame.

Because having unkillable tanks is so much more healthy for ADC. By far.

Everything being strong is bad for the ADC: assassins kill you instantly with no chance for retaliation, mages kill you quickly without even getting close to you and tanks make it difficult to do your job.

The difference between tank metas and burst metas? Tank metas don't lead to ADCs dying the second they look at the enemy team. I'd rather have to show more skill with my positioning and target selection (tank meta) than die before I get to do anything skill-related. (assassin meta)

blujadajhdja18 votes

Yes pls. I don't know if I'm the only one, but as an assassin main, I hated the assassin meta. In solo queue, I would always see people playing assassins without paying as much attention to the map and just stomping on people without thoroughly knowing the champion they play. Now they can't do that as easily with the tanks becoming popular and countering them.

Lugg8 votes

What a joke. Assassins are still the strongest class in the game. They still snowball and roam. This is just a pathetic attempt by assassin mains to get free wins. On a scale of 1-10, the AVERAGE assassin right now is an 8. The only ones that are actually balanced at this point are Kassadin, Kha'Zix, and Master Yi. The secondary assassins are just as broken. Fiora, Irilia, Lee Sin, Riven, Tryndamere, Xin, and Yasou all need nerfs as well.

An assassin should be able to go in, kill a carry, and escape for 10+ seconds to wait on CDs to come back up. Right now, they can go in kill the carry, and still be able to kill everyone else.

All Cinderhulk did is take away free kills on tanks. They are still easy targets for assassins level 1-10 since they HAVE to have defensive items to live.

Yes, assassins drop off some late, but by then you should have the game won. If you don't roam and get your teammates fed while being ahead, you deserve to lose the game.

G2 Hamza Har 7 votes

they say assassins are dead but the fact that Leblanc kills me as a 4 items shyvana with 2 rotations of spells preoves it's bullshit

Ayataeme3 votes

LB is not an assassin. she is a mage. And its easy to kill her. if she kills you very easy that means you are unskilled to play against her. I hate her also but not for your reasons, I hate her since i never kill her with that blink of hers that makes a fast getaway. so it highly annoying but she is high dmg champ but not assassin.

TM 9931 votes

No, Leblanc is most def an assassin
