PSA: Downvoting Protocol

Tulare·12/26/2018, 9:39:16 PM·25 votes·8,441 views

If you go through your threads and downvote anybody who merely disagrees with you, you're not actually looking for discussion; you just want an echo chamber to reinforce your opinions. Downvote for illogical arguments, rude behavior, or off-topic comments. Reasonable people can disagree without trying to quash discussion.

Time to downvote this post.

Voting, up or down, is a way of showing if you approve or disapprove of someone's idea, opinion, suggestion, etc. If you say 'yasuo should be available only in dia+ because he requires skills to do well that bronzes don't have' then I'm going to downvote you, because I feel this is a terrible idea.

Besides, to go with your route, you should only upvote for a post that is well written, polite and well thought out points, no matter what those points or a arguments are. Never upvote just because you agree with the sentiments.

You seem to be blending the report button and down voting.

This happens in every place where downvotes exist .. Reddit is even worse , be it a League discussion or on something else , I get downvoted that it feels I'm not even allowed to comment

How? Just because you're post gets downvoted doesn't mean what you said gets deleted

Unless it's incredibly dumb or insensitive Then it just straight gets hidden

But I've never seen someone who makes a fair argument go beyond that downvote limit, so unless you're really sensitive to the idea of your comment being disliked by someone else, I don't really see why they're such big deals.

Unless you're avangelion w1nks, then you pretty much comment something everyone is going to hate on a thread and get below -100

Or, better idea. Make posts stay visible no matter how many downvotes they receive. No more "quashing discussion", and people are still allowed to disagree without typing up a well-researched and peer-reviewed essay.

I agree with most of what you said, downvotes negate and ruin discussion. All it does currently is create hiveminds and echo chambers.

The thing you should reconsider, is this:

Downvote for illogical arguments

This is kind of subjective and most people in this board think anything they disagree with is an "illogical argument".

it is funny how the topic directly under this has -17

I 100% agree. I've been running into a lot of people that seem to think their opinion is law, and when presented with differing opinions or evidence as to why something might be incorrect, it's just "nope" or "sorry lol doesn't work that way." I don't like to perpetuate the cycle of negativity, I just wish the Boards were a more inviting place for discussion.

I'd like to see all the boards get the Gameplay+ treatment where downvotes are removed and only upvotes can be administered. Maybe not permanently, but it would be neat to try out.

[Meanwhile downvoting >What do you mean? O.o< all comments]

Ha, true. I recently experienced it with the Lore Tournament posts I picked up from Bioluminescence.

I mean, I get that not everyone is into lore, but then you should just ignore these posts instead of downvoting.

However, that's not it. If that was the case, all of the posts would have a constant number of downvotes.

No, it was way worse. Only one post got hit, specifically the one where "Confessions of a Broken Blade" lost against "Art ist Life". All of these post get 10 to 15 upvotes and 0 or 1 downvotes. That one got 4 downvotes. (Tragic, I know). Comments for Art also got downvoted.

Why? I still have no Idea, but I suspect it's because they liked Confessions better. Well guess what, there was a poll. Vote for it! To be honest, I also liked it better. But I don't go around downvoting everyone with a different opinion! That simply is no reason to downvote, because these posts are meant to encourage discussions!
