Let's discuss 'hot' sorting

With the current wave of boards testing, I believe one of the more focused topics has been the 'hot' sorting

So I'd like to see everyone's opinions on it and get a discussion going about it to gather more information about it

Be it those who think that it needs to be removed, those who think it needs to stay and it's perfectly fine, and those who think there is room for improving it

##and explaining why you feel that way

So let me start this discussion by explaining why I think there is means for improving it, to give an example of sorts and to generally get my thoughts out to promote further discussion on them as well

I believe that the hot sorting view is a useful tool to find the current relevant topics of the day's current focus for not only the boards in general, but also for each boards sub section as well

I also believe however that causes those threads to get a spotlight effect of sorts, that causes attention to avert from other potential promising threads before they can even get a fair start

Finally, I think one of the biggest issues with the hot sorting right now is how it's currently coded, how it seems to prioritize the amount of upvotes a thread has more over the number of recent comments within it

Where threads with a hearty amount of upvotes and little to no discussion in them are getting put in it's coding in higher positions in the hot sorting view system than other more possible comment heavy discussion focused threads with less upvotes

It's in my opinion that both upvotes and downvotes are also useful tools that these boards need, but they should only be used to show interest or disinterest in a thread and not have more power than recent comments that promote a healthy discussion more

While the current hot sorting view does work to some boards sub section's natures where upvotes are given more than comments like Memes & Games and Streams & Videos, it doesn't give the other board sections that are more discussion focused a chance to be in said 'hot' focused spotlight as well, which is why I believe the current hot sorting view can be improved upon

I too believe that sorting by Hot should stay, but I'd rather have Hot organized by the amount of comments on a post (in total, not just recently, as that's for sorting by recent), rather than the amount of upvotes.

This would promote discussion and actually fits with the term "Hot", as the post in question would be something a lot of people are talking about it.
