Looking for champ purchase advice

Although I prefer to play one of the two bot lane roles, I try to keep up on a little of all of them in the event I need to fill. I think, however, that my mid lane champ pool is weak, and I am looking to expand that. So far, I have what I think are safe laners who scale well in the late game (Karthus, Ryze) or utility champs (Morgana, Karma, Soraka). What I am interested in is one of the roaming assassins. These champs are outside of my comfort zone, however (which is one of the reasons I want to start learning how to play them), and as such, I am not sure who is a good buy for learning the play style. Who is a good first assassin?

Syndra is a very effective roamer, and essentially plays like an assassin if you rush DFG. She'd also probably be relatively easy to get used to if you've got experience with Morgana or Karthus. If you want a 'true' assassin, Ahri seems to be doing relatively well after her buffs this patch - maybe try her.

My first assassin was Zed. He is difficult, but just watch Faker or Bjergsen play. He is difficult but well worth it. And he is actually really fun to play.

Well, a cheaper route to go instead of rushing for Zed or Fizz would be to go with Akali or Katarina. They are both very amazing mid laners and if you can learn to play them well you can easily bring your team to victory. They are both decently easy to play.

Get Akali if you're used to defending yourself and need some extra defense with her W skill which allows her to hide to escape or attack from the shadows.

Get Katarina if you can take a hit and are used to throwing out a ton of damage - her ult is awesome in team fights.

I recommend Fizz Fizz because he has high burst damage and can roam fairly easy. And with the fisherman skin you have an urf!

If you're interested in learning assassins, I strongly recommend Talon. He's the ideal assassin for a player who is just learning the role and for the price is incredibly strong. He isn't necessarily the strongest pick right now, however, he still has incredible potential and his fairly easy kit lets you get used to the basics of mid-lane assassins (he's actually fairly similar in laning style to Zed, so great practice) such as roaming or warding correctly for their play-style.

If you'd like to remain true-to-farm of the mid lane with an AP champion, Katarina is a good choice as others have mentioned, however I strongly prefer Leblanc. She requires a little practice to get used too, but is also incredibly strong through most of the game and I prefer her due to her ranged auto attack. She is also a cheap champion, so you can pick her up for chump change and you're not losing much if you end up disliking her.

I'll agree with the previous guys. Zed/Fizz/LeBlanc are all great assassins. Talon is pretty hard due to mana and low range, he gets pretty countered by a lot of current meta champs. Syndra is pretty good too.

Ahri and Kass are assassins that have a little less burst but a whole lot of other things and are a bit safer than some of the other assassins. And Yasuo is kind of assassin-y in a weird way. His sustained damage and burst are pretty good especially after Shiv/IE.

I'm surprised you find Ryze/Karthus to be safe compared to things like Ziggs/Twisted Fate/Xerath.

First off, in my opinion ryze is completely unviable in the midlane as his short range leaves him no option but to feed against someone like ziggs, xerath, or another short range mage like lissandra.

For a safe laner who scales decently well, I reccomend xerath and ziggs. Both are kings of poke and waveclear, and have a very safe laning phase while granting their team near immunity against tower seiges.

For a first assassin, I would reccomend katarina or akali. Both are ap champs, very snowbally, and can easily ace the enemy team in post fight cleanup. Akali can chase the enemy team forever, but has a lackluster pre-6 time, where kat is strong over the entire game, and is reset city. Fizz is another good choice, but I personally feel that he's a bit unexciting

I would reccomend avoiding AD assassins like talon or zed because they are a bit more mechanically complicated.
