About champions and resources
Hello! In this discussion I want to talk about what resource would be more lore attached to X champion and share my general thoughts about resources in league. These are just personal thoughts and I do not look even a little about balance, so please don't come and say "X champion would be unbalanced with Y resource" because this is just about what kind of resource fits better X champion by their lore or other reasons.
Let's start:
Olaf - Fury:
Well, this one is an old one, since I started to play in league people have been always trying to convince Rito to transform him into a Fury user, and it's normal, by his lore he is a great berzerker with two axes and by his gameplay he is heavily AA oriented both by his passive and his E. If we take in consideration that Fury is a resource made to heavy AA's users then is obvious that Olaf should be a Fury user. It just perfectly fits him.
Renekton - Ferocity:
Maybe is just my opinion, but Ferocity and Fury are very similar as a concept, and the diference between them is while Fury is an AA's oriented resource (you gain ferocity each time you do an AA) Ferocity is a caster oriented resource with spikes of power by empowering their next cast (Rengar, his only user, has proven to be dificult to balance because that). Renekton just invented Fury and when he was released he probably Fury was envision as nowadays Ferocity works, but time has passed and now we have a resource that fits him better mechanically and does still fits him lore-wise.
Alistar - Ferocity:
This is a much more a personal one. Even before we got Rengar to play with him, I dreamed with a tank with a similar resource that builds up untill you got a empowered cast (I just named it "shielding" because I lacked of imagination at the moment) . The reason because I would like to see Alistar with Ferocity is in part that, and in part is because Ferocity could really fit Alistar personality and his lore, where he is portrayed as an always raging minotaur, but because he does not relies in his AA's (Fury) I can imagine him with Ferocity, a more caster oriented Fury.
Udyr - Energy
Even if this would be a straigh nerf due to the item build limitation that an energy user have, resource theme fits well Udyr because in League actually Energy is equivalent to "ki" or somekind of martial arts related resource, and Udyr is a martial artist that learned from Lee Sin, somekind of strange martial artist druid, yep. It just fits him lorewise.
Please, remember these proposals are NOT taking in cosideration any kind of balance problems or anything like that, I'm just sharing my own thoughts of what resource makes more sense in what champion
General Thoughts about resources:
I tried to classify each resource before doing this post, here are what I have finally got:
Fury
it's main characteristic is that build's up with AA's, effects of fury differs greatly depending of the champion, but every one of them have one thing in common, building up Fury rewards you always offensively and increases the physical damge you do.
Ferocity
It's main characteristic is that build's up with spell cast and can be used to do an empowered cast
Mana*
The classic one is the jack-of-all-trades resource in this game, but I mainly envision it as a classic mage resource and in general terms it is the best resource since the build paths with manaless are more limited or waste some of the cash spend.
Energy
I personally don't know how to classify this one, it is just a manaless for oriental lore champions in league, maybe it's main function is to give champions a good of explosive power at cost of not being able to just smash buttons
Heat
Rumble one!, this resource is pretty funny because you MUST have control over your own actions in order to not mess yourself, it's main characteristic is that it seems to be some kind of hybrid oriented resource in mid way from casting to AA's.
Resourceless
Here is where Garen and Katarina falls, this is one of the more abstract resources that have no main characteristic aside from not having more limits than their CD's. I guess Riot should give this resource an identity, because if it has one it isn't clear.
Flow
This resource system is unique because is the only resource that builds up with movement, so you are rewarded for being mobile, and when it's fullfilled gives somekind of buff. When Yasuo, it's only user at the moment, fills his resource get's a free shield, but who knows? Maybe in future we will see other champions with other effects derived from Flow.
Health
Health resource works in a way that it's supossed drawback is that everytime you cast something you get weaker, but our league this resource consumes a negligible amount of health, so the final result is that we have another resource is more gated by CD's than by the risk of killing yourself. It's only real user in my opinion is Aatrox, who's life bar dance everytime.
Health resource variatons:
-Blood pool, this one is easy to define, basically it is the same as health system but it is AA oriented and increases each time you cast your spell in exchange of your own health, the more Blood pool resource you get the more AS you get. It's in my opinion a well designed health variant that works fine and defines pretty well how health resource should be, a health "dance". -Shield, this is Mordekaiser's one, it seems to be oriented as a reward for being agressive, so the more you cast your spells in your enemy the more you get protected, it is confusing because I thought Riot have stated that they don't like to reward offense with defense, but not sure about this last.
If you have a champion who you think should have other kind of resource to fit him better, please post your idea, I will be glad to read each one of them :)
EDIT: Added Flow resource. Thanks SerBlaise :D EDIT 2: Thanks to Khodexus for remmenbering me that health resource exists, added to the list. Added a new champion/resource suggestion, Udyr. Trying some kind of clarity changes in the original post because I found it a bit hard to read. EDIT3: tldr added.
TL;DR: Some lorewise resource changes to champions and a lot of personal resource thought that is pretty hard to read fully XD
