First, i have a feeling that Gnar is similar to Majin Trundle (amirite?) and i hope i am wrong. For the Lore, i'm smelling that he's the first watcher but where is the void portal? And finally i hope he will have a battecast/Mecha skin?
Taric did it. Gnar wasn't frozen. He was gem'd.
Riot has been doing this thing of trying to make champions are part of the world not by telling their story, but rather how they relate to someone else already here. It would not surprise me if Gnar and VelKoz don't like each other.
From the looks of it, he might be a prehistoric yordle who lived in the Freljord. It looks like he fought something that suspiciously looks like 
... did he fight the Watchers? Was it they who froze him? MYSTERIES ABOUND.
He's the first Watcher? All we saw of Gnar was 3 cave drawings and a short animation, don't say there wasn't a portal involved. A lot of people think that the tentacle bro that killed Gnar's family is Vel'Koz, I think it's a Watcher because they are obviously in the freljord, and it looks too different from Vel'Koz, even for a cave drawing. Also, if Gnar is a troll or a yordle, he probably has some werewolf characteristics, because you can see him popping out of the ice and he's really beefy, has tusks, and a tail. I don't think he's either a troll or a yordle, but he could be.
Pretty sure its a Yordle that gained immense power from seeing his family getting slaughtered by an unknown creature, I was thinking velkoz because of the Eye and Bolts could be his tentacles. If you didn't notice in the picture that it was the oldest offspring of the family.

To me the drawings suggest that this is the tribe of white small creatures "investigated" and destroyed by vel'koz. All was destroyed but a citadel of great power and he found a device they used to manipulate their concept of time.
It ll be a smaal white 4 legged melee mid, with a grudgefest for Vel'koz.

While this could be ENTIRELY wrong, I suspect him and his clan were frozen by the Watchers with or without Lissandra. Now that he's thawed out, he is pissed.

Not likely, but Amumu literally has no interactions with anyone except for Annie. And not there's an ancient Yordle (or Yordle looking thing), please please PLEASE have a connection.

I don't think that it was velkoz, in the painting it looked like the thing had teeth... or it could have been mountains idk.
