Akali R > E Mechanics: We Should Have Taken a Left at Albuquerque
@Riot @Morello @Meddler
EDIT: Sorry, I'm behind the times for the Riot staff, my apologies.
EDIT: Here's a video - HD Capture, Enjoy :-) The video is HD, just need to let it buffer for while. I'm new to capture so maybe I'm doing it wrong...
Edit 3: I have moved discussion of Akali's Q > R > E combo to a fresh post. Here's the link: http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/champions-skins/AqEIwku0-akali-design-element-discussion-combo-mechanics
I am a seasoned Akali player and I have previously posted about The Fist of Shadow,
. In one such post, I asked for feedback from the community concerning issues I was having detonating MotA during fast pace combos. I have now definitely discovered a part of the problem I was having, so let's start there.
It may be my overall inexperience or lack of attention but it was news to me that when Crescent Slash is used during flight to a target after casting Shadow Dance, Akali will walk back to the position Crescent Slash was cast before using it. To reiterate, using an R > E combo in rapid succession will cause Akali to return to the cast location of the E before casting. Not only does this phenomenon make the player look ridiculous to their team and enemies, it has also ruined many of my MotA proc combos. I cannot count the number of times I make a last ditch effort to kill under tower, using my R > E to proc a Q at the greatest range, and the target walks happily away with my MotA still spinning over their head.
At times like those, I just didn't know what was really happening and I'll tell you why: If you press E only slightly before flight ends, Akali only takes a step or two back from the target and this can go unnoticed in the fray of battle. What doesn't go unnoticed is the silence of an announcer with nothing to announce. And in that silence, only rage and shame can be heard in my living room.
So, since I am without doubt that this occurs and that it can easily be reproduced, my question is: was this really the intention? I will say this, putting Akali's spells on global CD while in flight after using Shadow Dance is not the solution I'm looking for. Ideally I would like to be able to press R > E as fast as my adrenaline pumped fingers can jam the keys down and have the E cast whenever flight is completed. That may be asking a lot; in fact I used to be able to stack
's R > Q > E while my Riftwalk was porting and somewhere along the lines (rework) that got abolished. So maybe the champion design team has deemed ability stacking unhealthy...(i hope not, cause I love it).
But either way, I think its clear that
automatically walking away from the target she just Shadow Danced to was not an intentional part of her kit. Especially considering Crescent Slash is not a targetable AOE and does not have inherent move-to-cast functionality. And I can honestly say: this has had a negative impact on my Akali play in situations like the aforementioned tower dive. Having given Akali the option of E procs, I believe this combo needs some immediate attention. As it stands right now, she cannot be played to her full design potential.
Please, I'd love a comment from a Red if possible.
