[Client] Starting up League for the first time freezes my computer for ~20 seconds

(Possible fix at the bottom of this post!)

As explained in the title, my computer freezes when I start up League for the first time on my computer. My mouse still works fine, but my computer won't respond to any input. The launcher won't even appear. After those ~20 seconds or so I have to go into the task manager and stop 3 instances of LoL Patcher. Killing one kills the other 2 as well. After that, I can start up the launcher just fine.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Restart computer
  2. Start LoL launcher

This can be reliably reproduced.

Specs: OS: Win7 64 bit RAM: 4GB Processor: Intel Core i7 CPU (860 @ 2.80 GHz 8CPUs) GPU: nVidia GeForce GTX 460

Edit: This no longer happens to me. The patch from 4 months ago fixed it. Instead, my computer now freezes when trying to connect to the chat service. League stays black after the freeze until I restart it.

Edit 01.03.2015: I noticed I had "PnkBstrA" running in the background. Seems so be linked to Steam or something. It was running 24/7 and constantly checks for programs running on your computer. It can be uninstalled by running the file linked in the first paragraph here: http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsvcfaq.php This fixed the freeze for me.

Finally, someone else with this problem too. I'm having the same issue no ever since the last update. First boot of the day with my computer LOL won't launch, I as well have to open task manager and shut down 3 instances of Lolpatcher that are running -- I'm running win7 64bit as well.

I have a similar problem, but the freeze only occurs when it's loading after I've successfully logged in. The freeze time is anywhere from 10 seconds to a minute, and after that everything is fine again.

On a (possibly) related note, my client will never load the images in the Home section of the client, but everything else works fine.

OS: Windows 7 (64-bit) SP1. Motherboard: Asus M5A97 LE R2.0 CPU: AMD FX-8320 3.5GHz 8-core GPU: Asus Radeon HD 7770 1GB

Having the same problem on Windows 7 64-bit. Started happening a few months ago. Every time i login for the first time computer freezes for about 30 seconds. Only on first startup of LoL. If i close lol and login again, it wont happen. Also, half of the time, the news and sales in home page stay black (again, it doesnt happen if i close client and reopen it).

No response from riot?? I have been having this issue for MONTHS. Every.single.time i start my comp and open league of legends. As my client tries to appear it is ALWAYS all black and my computer will freeze solid (mouse, keyboard, and all ports do literally nothing) Ive deleted all versions of adobe flash and ive updated it fully MULTIPLE times with no success. Many times when i quit out and relog back in i still get a blacked out client but normally its fixed on the relog. Also many times my entire comp locks up as the client pops up before i press launch on the pre client. Everytime ever on first load up it will always lock everything for 45 seconds to 2 minutes as my computer sits there frozen and it gives me the feeling its doing bad things to my comp. I would love a fix for this, its painfully annoying and it feels like ive been playing league of legends BETA for several months. Never EVER does my computer freeze with any other programs or games and i have a $1,200 rig. Its certainly software issue on Riots part and we need helP!!!!!!!!

I'm getting this same problem (although it can take several minutes for mine to unfreeze). No problems running other games/software.

I'm running: OS: Win 7 64 bit

RAM: Corsair XMS @1600 MHz (rated for higher, i think 2000, maybe 2300) 4x4gb

CPU: AMD FX8150 (8-core, 3.6 stock speed, clocked at 4.0, tested stable for days on Prime95 w/ no temp issues) Also confirmed it's not overheating on launch or anything like that.

GPU: XFX Radeon 7500 stock settings

Hi,

I've already encountered that problem with last patches, have you tried to update your Adobe Flash Player?

Try it: http://get.adobe.com/it/flashplayer/

This morning after the update of flash player seems that my problem has been definitely fixed, I hope this can help you.

Having the same problem.

Not really cool with a game freezing my $1,500 computer for 20ish seconds with 0 explanation as to why.

Wouldn't mind a post acknowledging this ..

Same issue here only for the first login of the day. Whole windows freeze for about 15s. i guess it is to load those images in the interface? I have no problem opening Garena's version of lol client.

I've been experiencing this problem for quite some time now, and its been getting steadily worse. Today my computer was frozen for a good 3 minutes. I tried bringing up task manager to kill leagues process's but it locked my computer down even farther when i used the Ctrl-alt-delete command and was unable to even move my mouse.

OS windows 7, intel i7

I have the same issue ... now. Punkbuster is not installed on my system. The suggestion that this issue is related to adobe is intriguing. Has this been confirmed?

midorii3/26/2015, 12:55:09 AM1 votes

I have the same issue, glad it's not just me. I don't have punkbuster and I have Chrome so I always have the latest version of flash

Kaillyne5/6/2015, 4:39:21 AM1 votes

The PunkBuster thingie doesn't have the "uninstall" option, only the reinstall/install option. Now what?

Updating Adobe flash player worked for me computer doesn't freeze and the videos all show on the home screen

Gaff10/26/2014, 8:12:14 PM1 votes

Same exact problem that I posted about here: http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/bug-report/j7sVJ9Ba-client-launcher-freezes-pc

Seems to be fairly rare as I am the only one of my friends experiencing this. Same OS (Win 7 x64).

What are your system specs? (RAM/processor/GPU)?

Intel i5 3550 Ivy Bridge 3.3GHz 12GB RAM GeForce 760 2GB

Bismuthinite10/27/2014, 12:02:43 PM1 votes

Added my specs to the OP, plus a screenshot describing the problem.
