Riot, instead of constantly pushing new content, why not step back and fix some bugs instead?

TheWizardM··22 votes·9,302 views

I'm still encountering bugs that are 2+ years old. I know that Riot makes its money by pushing new content, but leaving in 2 year old bugs is sloppy and honestly takes away alot of fun from the game. Here's just a few:

  • Blitzcrank passvie animation and sound effect loop for the entire game after proccing once.
  • Loading screen loads you in after the game has already started, and has a high tendency of crashing.
  • Minion block is complete RNG. You can get blocked by a single stray minion and be able to walk through a whole army of them, it's rather random, and pathing doesn't take into account the hitboxes of minions as far as I can tell, meaning your champion can just walk into them and get stuck.
  • Most of the tooltips don't accurately reflect what an ability does.
  • % hp based dmg and executes are calculated incorrectly (Try playing Ziggs while holding a calculator, you'll notice how far off it is).
  • Death recap has many bugs, including incorrectly stating damage types, incorrectly stating what ability dealt the damage, and showing nameless abilites.
  • and many more

I really just want Riot to stop releasing new champions altogether.

At least, until we fix the ones that are already there.

TheSymbolÔfPeace10 votes

They won't do that until their entire sense of direction changes. They care more about money, they can deny it all they want but their priorities are focused on how they can mooch off the player base until the squeezed every last drop.

Why do popular champs get skins while old ones don't? They get more money.

Why fix bugs, which will cost more time when we can promote those cool hextech chests for that money!

It's honestly sad. I really wish Riot cared more about their game.

TheWizardM3 votes

Thing is though, long term this spaghetti code is only gonna cost them more money.

There is a unique team dedicated for every aspect of the game you mentioned, crafting skins is done by the skins team, promoting hextech chests and other paid content is done by the marketing team.

The developers, server engineers and NOC are responsible for bugfixes and server health and they're doing their best to ensure we enjoy the game as best as possible.

That's the problem, if they have all those different teams, and one of them isn't doing their job well, why are they just letting it happen? Everyone loves the skin team, their skins are high quality and they deliver them with decent timing for what they do. However, they only deliver skins to the ones either he most popularity (they are getting better, but still faltering, Hetexch crafting has always been a a money scam, they give absolute garbage rewards and are basically you buying a lottery ticket where "you'll get it next time". They buff random champions that are popular in order to increase their popularity to get more money,

Kürama1 votes

They don't create skins for champs which are popular in the current meta as it takes months to fully develop a skin, what's popular in the meta now may not be popular in the meta in 3 months time.

Here's a lot more insight on the process of skin creations.

As for Hextech, yes, it's a gamble and you're aware of that. Nobody is forcing you to purchase something you don't like.

As for buffing random champions that are popular, I encourage you to read the patch notes (they provide context on these buffs / nerfs there) and ask Meddler or RiotScruffy (Design Directior and Lead Gameplay Designer respectively) the whys behind said buffs and nerfs.

Metas last a long time, like a LONG time when it comes to this game. Riot takes their sweet time into changing the meta around. How long has the "One shot or be one shot" meta been around again? Since the beginning of Season 8?

Hextech is a gamble, obviously. However, they tune the garbage loot up and good loot down in order to get more money, please don't tell me that they balance that fairly, it's almost a money scam.

Riot tells us why they do buffs and nerfs? I don't know if you've been playing League lately at all, but Riot has favorites. "But, but, they have reasons" is a stupid excuse for why they buff and nerf a champion. They can say whatever they want, doesn't make it the right call. If you recall on PBE those Yasuo changes? The community nearly lost it, and THAT is the reason we nearly escaped the ridiculous change. Their reasoning is ridiculous, they buff things that favor their meta to get more profit. Riot has lost all sense when it comes to understanding how the community works, but man they excel in business. But that's the only thing that matters right? Who cares about the rest of the community when they can just make piles of cash through a buff or two to meta champions, right? It's ridiculously true, and if you doubt that then you're just hopeless.

Metas don't last that long and overpowered champs last an even shorter time before they're nerfed. The "One shot or be one shot" has been around since Midseason (Patch 8.11) so 3 months thereabout.

Like I said, nobody is forcing you to purchase something you fear won't satisfy your investment. It's also worth noting that the more valuable an item, the more scarcely tuned it will be.

Riot looks at data generated from matches across all skill levels (particularly upper levels) to see if a champ is overperforming or underperforming, so while feedback is reviewed and appreciated it, sometimes feedback is too opinionated to act upon.

You state the reason for their actions is stupid but provide no context or evidence as to how these decision are stupid. The Yasuo changes were highly experimental and were unlikely to make it to the live servers either way. It's what the PBE is for, to experiment and review the results of said experiments in an isolated environment so as to not screw up the game for all players.

Metas don't last that long, I can tell you haven't played League in the last year, or you would've remembered the wonderful Ardent meta, or do you care to defend that meta? How long before marksman were nerfed again?

It's scummy when a company makes the loot skewed towards getting garbage. It's also pretty sad when people back this up by saying "nobody is forcing you to buy it". You don't understand that they are PROMOTING the buyable items that are largely biased to give you garbage.

Ah that's makes sense, Riot really doesn't listen to the data. Remember Ezreal with a +55% wr and a 40% pr? That didn't take long to nerf right, since the stats show he's performing extremely well? Oh wait it did. Evelynn sitting at almost a 10% pr and a 53.44% wr, Alistar sitting at a 17% pr and a 52% wr. Rakan sitting at a 19.5% pr and a 51.55% wr. You're right they ARE looking at the stats my bad.

I state no reasons? Do I really need to state a reason as to why a 100% INCREASE on a <40second level 3 ult is ridiculous? His ultimate already loaded with a out of range turret reset, shield reset, cc, armor shred, and it has decent damage. You're telling me that Riot isn't even smart enough to know that they shouldn't even place that buff on the PBE? That's ridiculous that it wasn't even SUGGESTED. Anyways, the PBE isn't the only way to get our information to Riot before they seal the buffs/nerfs forever. But let's go back to ardent meta with adcs. Everybody hated the meta except for adcs which were overpowered as heck with the ardent buff. It took them until after Worlds to fix ardent and it took until SEASON 8 to finally nerf that role.

I understand that you are a Riot fanboy and like to defend every little criticism ever tossed at them, but you need to understand that not everything they do is good.

Been playing League since 2010, thank you very much for assuming I haven't played last year or haven't played League much.

The more valuable the item, the lower the chances of getting it. It doesn't matter how much it's promoted.

As for balance, I'd highly recommend you read this article and this artcle. +50% win rate or 40% pick rate isn't conclusive of an overpowered champion, even though it may seem that way. The balance team looks at data from divergent angles, win rate and pick rate included.

After looking at that data, they have to determine where to decrease or increase that champ's power - where it'll be the most effective without changing them too much.

It isn't as simple as "Oh he's 55% win rate let's nerf him bois." You'd probably quit the game if that's what they did.

Again, PBE is meant to be experimental, there's nothing wrong with putting some crazy stuff there just to see the results, it's why it's called the Public Beta Environment.

Since this has derailed into a debate about Riot's decisions, I request you create a thread in Ask The Community if you'd like to continue this debate.

Oleandervine2 votes

Pretty sure the champ production/VGU teams are different than the bug fixing and balance teams.

TheWizardM1 votes

True, although they could at least spend more resources on their bugfixing team(s) :)

Kürama2 votes

It's not as easy as you think, they can't just pull members from another team who are working on other projects as those projects will suffer as well as the would-be beneficiaries of said projects (some / most / all players).

Hiring more developers isn't necessarily going to get the job done faster or better either, as the time it takes to advertise the position, to people noticing it and applying, to interviewing them to ensure they're qualified for the job, to orientation and getting them up to speed - by that time these issues and more would have been fixed.

TheWizardM1 votes

If that time is less than 2 years - which I very much assume it is - then no the bugs would not be fixed by that time. At the current rate, League is getting new bugs faster than their bugfixing team can fix them.

I hope they fix the bugs of Warwick

  • the q is clunky
  • the w is sometime active when it shouldn't be, sometime not active when it should be (like, every game, all the time, w is really bugged)
  • the R sometimes has a juge hitbox, but more often go through (this is game changing sometimes) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owL6FUUkg9Q
Larriet2 votes

Because different people work on those things, and the skills necessary for those jobs are not transferable. It would require new hires, and adding more people to a company is not an immediate solution to those issues in itself.

TheWizardM1 votes

It doesn't have to be immediate, so I encourage Riot to look for new hires in their bugfixing teams, and make sure those teams are always up to scale compared to how much stuff they are releasing. At the current rate, more bugs are making it into the game than the bugfixing teams can handle.
