Warden Sivir's 'e'

I was playing as Sivir in her warden skin against a Varus in his heart seeker skin and the spell shield on Sivir didn't block the damage from his q. I know the spell shield worked because I received mana from it, but the damage still went through. Is anyone else having this problem?
