Malzahar Q ib death

So I have seen this happen multiple times during gameplay as Malzahar and am unsure whether it was intentional or not.

Whenever I activate my Q, his skill shot silence ability, and then die in the middle of it, I can watch as the ability is cast, the animation plays, and then does nothing. It deals 0 damage and does not re-proc his E as is intended. I believe this is a bug because no other ability that I know of other than channels are cancelled after they are activated, even upon death thereafter. Any feedback would help.
