Gray client screen?

I'll click on something in the client like opening a chat box, picking a champ in champ select, changing my summoner spells, etc. and then suddenly only the client will go gray and I can't press anything. I have to force close the client and then relog. It keeps happening periodically, and now more often. What's going on?
