I was playing a game against Yasuo, and I was Gnar. During laning phase I was low on health and he was directly behind me. He was about to hit me with an auto-attack for the killing blow, so I flashed. After I flashed, it said that his auto-attack hit me and I died. Not only did it give him a free kill, I lost my flash.

so that just means his auto started before your flash, but didn't fully register and kill you until you'd flashed

You can't flash away from melee autoattacks once they have begun.

The animation will continue and the damage will apply every if you blink away.

This is intentional.
