LeBlanc Thunderlords proc with Q + Auto

In the FNC vs YG I noticed that LeBlanc was able to proc Thunderlords with Q + Auto + missed W Somehow the missed W (that did no dmg & didn't apply passive) was counted for is this normal? I tried in practice tool & it works only if i use W, and it doesn't matter if it hits or not. If this is ok then, can gragas proc Thunderlords with barel + auto even if he misses his E? what about shen dash or galio ...
