Champion missing on a turn

I had a champion on the board and was fighting away for this turn. When I returned home I had a champion missing but was still maxed out 3/3. Unable to place another champ on the board I ended up losing that round. Next round my missing champion came back but was on the bench and I was then 2/3 for my board.
