How do you find a good team?

Over the years, I've found a lot of difficulties joining teams for a variety of reasons.

• Interpersonal skills

Now, none of these things are really a problem anymore. I'm respectful, funny, and vocal. I'm in my D5 promotional series with a 29-11 w/l in my last 40 games. I don't really have friends in high places, but I think that's mostly because I'm just trying to get serious. Are connections really what get you into a good team? Every team I've been interested in doesn't go anywhere; they're not organized, passionate, etc. They find someone who's d2+, and I'm out, because they get to have their pick. It's just frustrating, and I'm mostly complaining, but seriously, it can't be this hard to find a semi-competitive tournament team consisting of weekend warriors.
