Performance Issues on the updated Summoner's Rift

RiotAeon Eternal·11/13/2014, 6:27:23 AM·45 votes·137,207 views

Hey all,

We're hearing some reports about players hitting performance-related issues on the updated Summoner's Rift, and we're actively investigating all possible causes.

While we look under the hood for potential optimizations on our end, there's also a possibility that the updated Rift just doesn't play nice with certain setups. For those with performance issues, we'd appreciate if you could:

  • Update your drivers
  • Adjust your environmental settings (try turning some down, as the scales got recalibrated! Your 'medium' settings on the old SR might actually be closer to a 'low' on the updated Summoner's Rift - even with the same performance)
  • Disable HUD animations
  • Disable VSync

If none of the above work, you can help us out by posting a description of the issue in this thread along with a DxDiag:

  • Click the START button on the bottom left corner (default) or press the Windows Key.
  • Type dxdiag in the search box and press ENTER.
  • Click "Save All Information..." on the bottom right of the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
  • Attach the file here.

We're seeing a lot of machines run the same or better on the new Summoner's Rift, but that's exactly what these staged rollouts are for - tracking down the unforeseen performance considerations and figuring them out.

We'll continue to provide updates via this thread on our efforts and thanks for your patience.

Quick update!

Thank you all for the helping us track down these issues.

We've been able to identify some potential causes of the hitching and major FPS-drop-spikes that many of you have reported. This has allowed us to make progress on a couple of improvements we believe should reduce these problems and help with overall performance. We're looking to get these out to you all in a small patch soon.

We will continue to look into additional ways to improve performance further with the hope that we'll be able to roll out more optimizations in future updates.

Thank you again for helping us understand these issues. I'll continue to update this thread with updates as we have 'em!

**Our hotfix patch, sent out this morning (11/17, 9:00 AM PST), includes the improvements mentioned above. **

For those of you who are experiencing poor performance on the update to Summoner's Rift, please give playing on the new rift a try after downloading this patch.

If these fixes are improving your performance or if you are still encountering issues please let us know. Thanks again for your patience and for your help in tracking down these issues.

Description is : I used to have ok FPS, generally 30ish FPS all throughout the game, regardless of team fights or not. But on the new Rift I get 20 frames in the jungle when I'm just walking around not near the camps, drop down to 15 frames when killing a camp, 10 frames in lanes with minions and/or a champion, and 5 or less during any fighting against another champ, regardless of 1v1 or team fights.

I've done all of the things listed to help try and improve performance. I already played at the lowest quality so I could have the best performance. My drivers are up to date. V-Sync has been disabled for a while now. And HUD animations are disabled

Hope for a fix, otherwise I'll have to just stop playing the game once the new Rift is fully released until I can get a better computer.

Well Rito, I looked through my r3dlogs and there was some very obvious things :

Games I played on the new SR during which i had those fps drops/freezes contains **thousands **of Assertions error

  • The 16/11, new SR** with freezes/drops**: r3dlog file: 50 MB with 177 687 instances of "ERROR| Assertion failed!", majority was :

Function: Spell::Effect::SpellFXRenderer::Update

Expression: false 002072.518| 0.0000kb| 0.0000kb added| ERROR| Assertion failed!

File: E:/jenkins/workspace/game-code-Releases-4-19-public-win32/code/Game/LoL/Spell/Effect/Client/SpellFXRenderer.cpp Line: 854

  • The 18/11 (after hotfix), new SR without freezes/drops: r3dlog file: 228 KB, with no significant amount of repeated assert errors (some file loading errors and warning in the first 30 sec but that's all)

  • The 20/11 (after 4.20 patch), with freezes/drops: ** r3dlog file: 5 MB file with 31 176** instances of "ERROR| Assertion failed!", majority was :

Expression: radius >= 0 && radius < 100000.0f 002618.247| 0.0000kb| 0.0000kb added| ERROR| Radius size was -40.000000 002618.296| 0.0000kb| 0.0000kb added| ERROR| Assertion failed!

So first, wtf these errors (but i'm a dev too so i can understand). But i thought assertion checking was only a debugging feature that is meant to be disabled in release builds to avoid unnecessary overhead...

Don't know if it's really gonna be useful for you but whatever, i can't play :(

So, I don't want to ruin another game by having to force my team through another 4v5 with unplayable conditions, would it be best to post the files for now so you can review until customs are enabled for this map?

EDIT: I should note that my biggest issue has been an insanely high ping and lag only when in a game (not the client). The game I was in I had severe ping issues in the 1k-5k range with minutes at a time attempting to reconnect. During this time I could not browse the internet, but once I exited the game to log back in and reconnect I could use my browser normally until I loaded back into the game. I did not have this issue yesterday night when I was playing and it has never occurred to this extent before, though I have had a number of nights of poor ping fluctuation this past year specifically the last 4 months or so.

Unfortunately it seems like I'll be one of the people who won't be able to play this new summoners rift. It's been a good run. :c

I played 2 games of the new Summoners Rift and I wanted to cry... I definitely do not have a good computer, in 2012 paying about 180 for it (plus like 100 warranty or some crap like that). Played the game back then i had a max of 24 frames, then later personally optimizing it running the fewest things and cleanings I got it to max out to almost 60 frames. Team fights have always dropped me to 15-20 frames normally as well. This new map put me at max 34 frames but kept dropping when i stood near a turret, inhibitor, minions, and obviously champions. Id say I average 13-17 fps farming and 2-10 fps when a fight erupts. Im pretty sure Ima receive crap about my computer, and that I need to buy a new one or something...

PS I hate the ranged minion animation as well. Sometimes I cant see the blue minion's projectiles

Let me give u heads up to all of u who want to help! I went trough half of the post opened like 30 or so .txt files and I still cant find a PC - Laptops Every Ware! :D

And from all the txt's I read i actually em amazed by couple of ur machines, Please do tell ur secret - how did u manage 25 FPS till now? I bet with ur tips i can get mine to do 190 FPS.

Seriously i don't know ur financial state so i wont judge why u bought the machine u bought.

But fore some of u there is a solution; I know most of u don't move their laptops for weeks from the same spot and u use them mainly for entertainment and communication. And u probably have mobile access to the internet from ur phone: u are better off selling that laptop and buying a PC right away (more performance for the same price, buying a used monitor saves for a nice GPU), I bet that some of u even own tablets and laptops witch means ur laptop advantage over a PC is made obsolete by the tablet.

KazeNekochan11/13/2014, 6:37:09 PM6 votes

so what do we do if we are already playing on the lowest settings? you guys assured us before the new map would be toaster friendly and run the same if not better. is there an option to keep playing on the old map? i know there are some mods that change the look of the map would that work for giving us back fps? i dont really care how good the new map looks if its not fun to play on

MotherChurch11/13/2014, 5:54:09 PM6 votes

My takeaways from playing on the Updated SR last night with some friends:

  1. Performance went way down. The game feels FAR LESS responsive than on the old map. On the old map I was running 60-80 FPS on high settings. I was running 30 on the new map with the same settings. The game was barely playable for my GF (she has a cheap computer). I would not be surprised if she quits the game over this.

  2. BUGS everywhere. Minions not attacking properly, towers ignoring minions, etc. Felt very unfinished (also the new health bars/numbers are ugly).

3). Everyone in my group hated the colors. The game looked weird and dull, without the normal "sparkle" that league art has. Honestly I think its a major downgrade in the look of the game. Textures also looked really flat.

Needless to say none of the people in my 4 person group were excited about the changes. Here's to hoping its improved/fixed before wider release.

There are Performance issues which are NOT hardware related.

Reproduceable: If playing with free camera and you hold space (to keep the camera on you) you will regularly have stuttering on the new SR.

I too am one of the people who will NO LONGER be able to play once this new map is fully released considering I was already on the Lowest possible settings and could play fine but now everything goes to shit just watching the creeps fight, when I face 1 champion i miss half the battle due to lag/frame loss and everything just freezes when it comes to a team fight.

I also just want to say it sorta has a DOTA2 vibe to it *and if this change was just to steal some fame or be more like DOTA2... that's just sad I chose League over DOTA2 for a reason.

Well riot I have done the above steps and nothing has changed. I would like to point out that I own an average computer. 500-600 dollar computer a year old and I have been able to run the old summoners rift at 40-60 FPS. I turned every setting on low in this map and disabled my vsync for a while and HUD animations are off. The problem with this is the map puts me at 20-30 fps when I play and roam and in 1 v 1 with champions like riven where there are a decent amount of particles running around I get 7 fps. In the base where we have super minions turrets blasting everywhere and major team fights I get almost a constant 5 until I leave the base and go back a little bit into the jungle. The lowest I have ever gone is 30 FPS... Now I know I don't own a 2 thousand dollar gaming computer but I shouldn't have to. The computers you tested that somehow gave you the idea this new map preformed better were obviously not done on the average computer. I am sorry I am not Bjergsen or some higher up player who can run 156 FPS constantly but the old SR was fine. I will attach my DxDiag in hopes that it will help you solve whatever issues that are causing this but it is not our computers. If the old map worked fine then put the old map back until you figure this out please.

RP Tzuyu11/21/2014, 9:56:39 PM5 votes

the fps stopped dropping after the hotfix patch, but then after the 4.20, it came back and even worst,

Slightly Suspect11/18/2014, 4:51:37 PM4 votes

Just a slight problem i noticed...

I played the Beta fine when it was limited to Team Builder. I didn't notice any lacking performance issues, however when it went live in the blind pick que, i began to experience much more lag than usual. There wasn't a lacking frame issue, but animations would stop, and people would float around and no animations would trigger, but i would see the health bars go down. Also i got disconnected from a game for the first time yesterday and i almost got dropped from another one, which has never been a problem in the past, nor were these problems in the beta. Good luck with the patches

On the new summoner's rift when Thresh souls are on the ground, my fps drops from 70~ to 30~

Comrade LTS11/15/2014, 7:51:25 PM4 votes

Upvote please.

Disabling sound through in game settings helps a lot with the FPS drops being caused by the new SR update. Fps can hop from an average of 5-10 all the way to 40-60.

Coto Xeto11/15/2014, 9:15:10 PM4 votes

I am having the same issues, my fps works fine with 20-30 fps on normal, but on new map, it goes down to like 1-5 fps, which everything just freezes, and I have all settings on low and other settings disable to get the most fps out of it.

p1nkpvnth3r11/13/2014, 10:41:31 AM4 votes

The entire game felt SLOW MOTION. My fps was actually higher than on the old map, but I had about a half second or more lag the entire game.

I also was excited to play on the new rift, because I have a color deficiency, and I heard that the map is supposed to increase CLARITY.

I could not see ranged minion attack animation AT ALL. Plus with my lag, my farm was even worse than it normally is.

Many champion abilities were EXTREMELY DIFFICULT for me to see. I even played with the brightness, and color settings on my screen.

Also, at all levels of visual settings, the lettering of summoner names was EXTREMELY BLURRY. I couldn't even read any of them.

I was using Varus, and it just so happens there was a varus on the other team, who was the only other person in the game who was experiencing a slo-mo feel.

Oh, and, I was having an issue with my champion not going where I clicked. I would (regular move) click, say, down the lane, to retreat, but it would occasionally move me towards the enemy, as if I had attack move clicked, which I wasn't.

I attached my DxDiag as well. Please take a look.

Really laggy at base and during teamfights. As a toaster computer user, I cri.

Sir Jeremy11/13/2014, 8:09:21 PM3 votes

i have 60 fps when at base but when i get out it's all downhill from there. 30 fps while farming in tower, 7-19 fps at teamfights, 23-27 fps when trading with enemies. got everything on very low, updated drivers, disabled everything. buying a new machine is out of the question as i am broke and currently unemployed. also running razor game booster, which doesn't seem to help any game i play.

Murzik11/17/2014, 9:31:42 PM3 votes

I have just finished a game after downloading the patch. Didn't have the lag drops as before. Thank you, Riot. Now I can be at ease. What was causing this problem, btw?

Spystrike11/18/2014, 8:38:10 AM3 votes

This might be a little backwards to what I expected. I ran pretty well on the new SR pre-patch this 17th. There were some games I got fps drop, down to maybe 40fps, but even then that's playable, and that was only for a fraction of the games on the new SR. Ever since the patch yesterday, though, I don't have fps drop, however I keep dc'ing from the game. I know at first it doesn't sound like a problem with the new SR, but since the patch, I can't play on the map. I'll have a solid 60fps, now I never have the drop to 40fps, which is great. However, even with a constant 80 ping, never spiking, I'll get "Attempting to Reconnect," and this effect I reproduce consistently on the new SR since the patch yesterday, and I DON'T have that "Attempting to Reconnect" problem on the old SR in ranked. I don't really understand how the different map would give me connection issues, but me playing on both maps multiple times confirms that the new map POST PATCH gives me connection issues. I'm adding the DxDiag in case they are topical, hopefully there is a simple solution before you port the new SR post patch to ranked! Thanks for your time!

Çhaos11/19/2014, 3:24:12 AM3 votes

So I love the new SR, but I do not love my newfound connectivity issues. I have done everything stated above and previous changes you have made have helped my game experience, but there is still a very annoying and frustrating problem. I normally can run the game easily and smoothly at 60 frames per second and have no interruptions, but on the new Rift I am getting constant spikes of lag/disconnectivity where I simply lose control of my champion for three or four seconds. It is generally during skirmishes or teamfights that this problem occurs so you can see my problem. I recently was playing mid Syndra and dominated my lane. I ended the game 17-6-7, but regardless of my score, we lost the game because of one of these spikes. I simply could not control my champion and ended up walking into the enemy team. By the time I regained control, it was too late to even Zhonya's. My team got crushed in the ensuing fight and we lost the game. Needless to say I was very frustrated with losing due to something that I could not control. Although this was the most crucial time that the lag spike occurred, it was not the only time. It happened six other times during my 40 minute game. Please look into it.

Sanctioned11/21/2014, 7:58:09 PM3 votes

i also can't seem to get into a game

cZTssnNMTt11/21/2014, 10:11:20 PM3 votes

Can you please respond with an accurate estimate of how long the current maintenance is going to take?

sir kazzy11/24/2014, 3:52:00 PM3 votes

For some reason the "Retrieving data from server" is taking forever (Even when im in custom games) also when i do play my pings go way up! when they are normally in the 90's-100's they shoot up to 190-300's plz fix this, it wasnt like this when the old SR was out so i think there is something wrong...

Skyceratops11/25/2014, 6:16:43 PM3 votes

Before the new summoners rift came out I used to run at around 40-50 fps and 35-45 fps during teamfights. Now in the new summoners rift I can get around 30-35 fps which is okay for me but the problem I'm having is when I hover my cursor over a model and it highlights it, I drop really low. My fps can get as low as 3-15 when I hover over something EVEN THE ENEMY. If this cant get fixed it will make the game unplayable for me so I hope there is a fix.

Tyrekai Faerian2/1/2015, 4:30:20 PM2 votes

I'm totally not a fan of being send to a forum to fix my issues, but oh well, let's give it a shot. Playing on the EUW servers, I saw my fps change from a solid 150fps in teamfights to an all low 23fps, making it impossible to react to any kind of danger. And not only on the new Summoner's Rift map. The fps is horrible on the ARAM map aswell, even in a simple botgame my fps tend to drop to a low 25 - 30fps.

I've done the list like they emailed me over and over again even before I contacted support about this, with no luck or any improvements in my fps. It's really annoying to play with a noticable stutter all over the place when I try to move my camera freely. It even has this delay in when I press the button, it won't give a response for a few miliseconds.

The issues are pretty annoying at the moment and I hope there is some kind of fix soon, since it's not really fun to see your game almost shutdown because Brand likes to throw his abilities all over the place.
