Requesting Bans Interface

The chat window is an awful way to communicate with your team captain about champs to ban or not ban. Most of us know better when solo queuing than typing, "Please don't ban X", because there's a 50% chance that your Captain doesn't read anything except "X" and will auto-ban your champ.

So the thought occurred to me: while the other 4 of us are sitting watching the bans happen, what if we could highlight champs we want banned or not banned the same way the captain picks them, by clicking on them?

My idea is to allow non-captains to left-click champs during the ban process, which would highlight that champ with a red outline and something eye-catching like sparkles. This would let the captain know someone wants a champ banned. As multiple people select the same champ, the highlighting gets more and more emphatic.

The second option would be to right-click the champion, which would give a context menu with the following options:

  1. Request ban
  2. Emphatically request ban!
  3. Clear flags
  4. I plan to play this champion
  5. Do not ban: I can counter this champion

1 does the same as left-clicking. 2 adds the visual indicator of 2 requests, but still only counts as 1. It could show up as "1+" or "1!" to the captain, so if 4 people request a ban, 2 emphatically, the captain would see "4!!" 3 removes all your requests from the champ. 4 gives the champ a blue border, and if the captain tries to ban the champ he gets a confirmation dialogue, but as always, captains get the last say. Each player can flag 2 or 3 champs as possible picks. Champs flagged this way show up greyed out on that player's icon (split-screen for more than 1), which lets players see what their team comp will look like even before the draft is over. 5 gives the champ a green border if there are no ban requests or cancels out one ban request. When the captain mouses over the champ, a mouseover tells him how many ban & keep votes the champ has.

One final option I just thought of was that if a player in blind draft has a champ listed as a possible pick when champ select starts, other players can't pick that champ, which would force teams to talk through their comp before autolocking. In draft pick, the blue border would show up for all teammates, and if someone tries to pick a champ another player has requested, they get a confirmation dialogue, but can obviously choose whichever champ they want.

(legal crap: I reserve no rights to these ideas and permit Riot Games to use them in whole or in part in any shape or form without compensation, acknowledgement, or obligation. If you use it and want to give me Morg or Blitz skins to say thanks, hey, that's up to you. ;))

I like this idea. Small problem with options 4 & 5, then I give it my thumbs up. These options assume way too much to be useful. Like in the older days when meta said Evelyn was bad meanwhile Evelyn was amazing. People would draft dodge to avoid playing with her, then when that player who could Evelyn got back, the team captain would ban her if they saw that player select her the previous game. This could happen all over again. However, having a way to get my vote across more easily and smoothly would be amazing, and this seems like the right idea.

Too bad we can't do votes as a team.
