A big THANK YOU to Riot for fixing ARAM! ^-^

I've said it before elsewhere, and I'll say it again. Thank you Riot. I mean it, thank you! ^-^

For several months, ARAM was becoming far too difficult to win. My usual winrates went down suddenly, and ARAM became a mode where my team would lose 9 out of 10 matches, for no apparent reason. Later, I read on the boards and website that ARAM was flooded with accounts that are optimized for ARAM, utilizing only champions, builds and runes that have a clear advantage, the most obvious one being range.

Then Riot introduced Mark/Dash as a summoner spell, and voila, my winrates went back to normal. Melee champs are viable once more, and it's been super fun to casually enjoy ARAM once again. ^-^ With the added fun/chaos of this new-ish mechanic (Lee Sin was the first to use it, whereas the actual spell was introduced during the Snowdown Legend of the Poro King limited mode. While I agree the damage doesn't necessarily have to be present, and the cooldown might be increased some, this one change alone has, at least in my experience, drastically improved the overall balance and quality of ARAM. ^-^ I am delighted with this change.

Those who are butthurt about it, and say ARAM is ruined because of Mark/Dash... I'm willing to bet this is because of several reasons:

  1. Their ARAM-optimized accounts no longer provide a clear advantage anymore.
  2. They have trouble dealing with the new mechanic.

With every new mechanic, item, or champion or whatnot, there are usually two reactions in general. Either it's "weak" or it's "OP". It's weak when they are unable to use the new content properly, and it's OP when their opponent is able to. The mechanic itself in ARAM is not OP, nor weak. It adds extra tactical elements, and more decisions. Do you jump in now for the kill? Is that wise? Will you risk it? Or will you save your Dash for another opportunity? It can also be dodged relatively easily, due to the rather slow movement of the projectile.

If you fail to dodge or get to safety/heal in time...don't get butthurt that a melee bruiser/assassin/tank dashes to you and slaughters the crap outta you and your team. There's plenty of counterplay to this mechanic, so it all comes down to your personal skill as a player. If you can't win with your Ezreal, Lucian, Yi, Kat, Xerath or what have you, because Darius' and Sions are now in your face, you need more practice. Don't take it out on a new summoner spell. ^-^

So, to close, thank you very much Riot. <3 You made ARAM fun to play again, as the casual mode it's supposed to be.

Won't be perfect until they unlock all champions for aram.

Failbot Deploy5/18/2015, 8:28:05 PM16 votes

I disagree. I don't have an ARAM account. I enjoy playing mostly melee champions and I can't stand this mode. This just turned it into fatty dives in and disables people while the team cleans up. It's not actually fun and though it does now promote a new style of play, it's not any better than it was before. Now all of the games I play are snowballs/steamrolls.

You think there are actually more decisions, but it's really "Are we ahead? Okay I'll jump in and win."

I can't stand the mark/snowball. I like Aram just for the reason that it felt like a relaxing way to practice team fights. Now there is an element that does not exist in any other mode.

I have only played ARAM 3 times since the change.

And right here is the main problem: People who seem to like it are those that think the mode is supposed to be "casual"

Oh no...people using champs and runes that gives advantage? SO DOES EVERY OTHER MODE!!!!!

And you really..really....**REALLY **think this is going to stop ARAM accounts? No..those people will just make new ones and only have champs that mark/dash has made OP.

I mean... I dare you to deal with a lissandra that takes mark/dash and can instantly engage with M/D into her W-ult. It's not balanced. Champions are balanced around their engages and their mobility. This completely reverses that.

Hoggy5/18/2015, 10:26:37 PM8 votes

The major problems with mark/dash are its cooldown and its range, not its actual inclusion into the mode.

Both of those are getting fixed currently on the PBE.

Now if only they would add that you can't teleport to minions, it would be perfect.

Note: I don't have an ARAM-specific account and wouldn't think of doing something as lame as that.

I like mark/dash and agree with you that CD should be increased. this is a troll post though right...?

Mark/Dash was fun as a side game for a month, but why would anybody want it permanently in ARAM? I play mostly ranked and jump into ARAM when I want to just chill and have some fun. To me Mark/Dash has taken a lot of that fun away because it has taken away a lot of strategy and greatly lowered the champs that are interesting to play in it.

And are you seriously saying that there are people who created accounts specifically for ARAM? That's freaking stupid, real stupid. I can't believe that people would be that shallow and that big of a loser. And more importantly, I could care less. I have never played a game of ARAM where I have felt that people on the other team are rigging the game. Who gives a crap, just go in and have fun.

Want to know what's not fun though? Having a tank from the other team basically getting a insta 3 flash length jump into your team... what a bore. It takes away so much strat in the game that there is no point in playing it anymore.

Honestly if they keep Mark/Dash in then they should take away about 70 champs.. just let people pick from about 15 to 20 that's left that play that style. That's what the game has been reduced to.

Your thread is hopefully correct, but not in the context that you present it.

The real thank-you to Riot is for the additional changes to snowball that went onto PBE. They tried modifying the damage aspect, but the rest of the absurd utility of the spell still made it optimal to take on 90+% of champions. Finally they realize that pretty much every single aspect of the spell was too powerful, so they're significantly lowering the range (you should be able to actually see a champion when they throw them now, instead of them just appearing from off the screen), and doubling the cooldown.

So, hopefully, when the next patch rolls around, the spell will actually fall back into the role it's supposed to have had the whole time: A summoner spell option available to those who want or need the extra engage tool, while not being a nearly mandatory spell on every single champion in the game. Maybe, just maybe, ARAM can go back to feeling more like ARAM and less like a gimmicky featured mode after this change.

If you say that you start winning because of mark/dash, maybe the problem was your decision making. Sure, skillshot poking is cheese, but there were tools to counter that, and having patience.

Mark/dash is just another comeback enabler or equalizer, if you haven't realized that. It's been the Rito trend or politic since s5 began.

Ghost Monster5/20/2015, 6:12:52 AM5 votes

Until people make aram accounts built around snowball. It fixes nothing and isn't fun to dodge snowball every single game.

Pucking Purrfect5/18/2015, 5:17:59 PM5 votes

Mark/Dash FTW.

Krigjer5/19/2015, 4:59:26 AM5 votes

I don't like ARAM and avoid it regardless, but based on what I've seen on the forums I had even more reason to never play the mode.

Then my friends asked me to last night and we just watched a Katarina land a snowball, BAM pentakill. That doesn't seem healthy.

I know my opinion doesn't weigh much because I hate the mode to begin with though.

FaRmErX5/18/2015, 10:34:38 PM4 votes

if your losing 9/10 games then it must be YOU being a non contirbuting member of the team SO bad in EVERY GAME. Mark hasnt made any champs easier to win with. im not going to quit LOL over this. i really dislike the mark however it is here now so OH WELL

oh wait it did make champs who didnt need the gap close easier to win with.. how much RP for a classic aram lobby Riot ?

Solaxo5/18/2015, 10:39:35 PM3 votes

I think you're finally winning because the MM is trying to normalize your W/L ratio..

FDru5/18/2015, 8:55:49 PM3 votes

I wouldn't say "fixed" but... yeah, it's better than it was before. Only 5 champs under 40% win rate now.

Bronze IV. Thought so. That proves that you just don't understand positioning.

Decaedeus5/18/2015, 8:46:50 PM2 votes

I feel like the Mark/Dash projectile is a bit hard to see though .__. Other than that, I agree with your post.

Extreme Troller5/21/2015, 10:43:50 AM2 votes

aram is so balanced that everyone pick the same summoner spell.

killstealbandit5/19/2015, 3:23:07 AM1 votes

what they need to fix is the random bots I constantly get placed with in ARAM games.

SKOBODO5/18/2015, 10:55:26 PM1 votes

I hope the PBE changes don't go through. CD increased to 40 from 20, range decreased from 2500 to 1600. I'm fine with the range decrease, but 40 sec is a bit much, 25-30 would be more reasonable imo.
