Lore & Theories

This thread is mainly for the Lore for League of Legends but feel free to start any type of discussions! I have speculated a lot on the lore because I run a D&D campaign in the world of Runeterra. So please feel free to criticize down below or add any of your own possible theories.

The Black Mist

So first I'm going to bring up the Black Mist and what follows, the Harrowing. Now some that it is never identified as the Black Mist, however that is only if you look into champion lore. If you look into the lore of the Shadow Isles you will find that there are multiple accounts of the Black Mist that surrounds it. We can now infer that the Black Mist was created from the attempt to crack open the border between life and death. This was issued as an order from the King of the Shadow Isles before the land became corrupted. I did however notice that Nautilus was not mentioned in the new Shadow and Fortune stories. I believe that he is not mentioned because unlike others from the Shadow Isles he does not travel with the Black Mist. I believe that these undead beings can chose to travel with the Mist and the undead which creates the Harrowing. Nautilus, to my knowledge, still wanders around and does not dwell on the Shadow Isles and thus does not partake in the Harrowing.

Champions

Fizz and Nami. Nami and her species rely on a moonstone that can only be received in a trade with a human. I really wish that Riot would give us an update on how her adventure is going and if possibly her people die or disappear. Fizz's people suddenly disappeared. I don't believe that this is because they relied on an artifact (like Nami's do) but rather some threat was foreseen by some type of seer amongst their people. They could be running or preparing for this threat. Could is possibly be the serpent that is portrayed on maps of Runeterra? I would love to hear more theories on this topic!

Kayle comes to Runeterra to ask for help in her war. Morgana realizes this and does the same. So through the knowledge we know we can now assume that these two are angels. This would also infer that there is a land of angels and because Morgana is a fallen angel we know that there are even fallen angels. We will refer to this land as The Land Of Angels

Now we know that Tahm Kench is a Demon who can take on different forms. However Aatrox is something different all together. He is 1 of 5 beings known as Darkin. The other four are completely unknown. Now if Aatrox is on the other team Tahm might say "Brother..." and says some senseless things. We can now infer that the Darkin were friends with Demons, or perhaps these two just knew each other. Some people might speculate that Tahm could be a Darkin and this could be possible but nothing really proves that point further than "Brother..."

Dimensional Planes

Now lets go back to the idea of different dimensional planes. These would be lands or worlds that are of a different dimension. It is entirely possible that The Land Of Angels is on a different dimensional plane but Kayle's lore does state "In a world far away..." so we'll leave that up to the readers personal opinion.

Now the Void is surely on a different dimensional plane. People explain what it is about above so go ahead and read their description on the Void. Now the Void is a place with monstrosities. Vel'koz, Kha'zix, Cho'gath, Malzahar etc. all these beings have their own special madness. Vel'koz loves knowledge, Cho'gath craves food, Kha'zix must be the best hunter, Malzahar is some type of priest/seer and of course there are more. The Void seems to almost be something living. If you really look into it then the void could possibly by something (don't know what) that slowly or quickly corrupts and soul and gives them these cravings mentioned above. In Kassadin's lore it mentions these cravings, "Kassadin was able to overcome the alien urges."

There are many speculations on Fiddlesticks, Nocturne, and Shaco. I will address my speculation on these as well. It is my belief that there is another dimensional plane of nightmares and horrors. Not like the Void which seems to be like some sort of living being that causes corruption in souls of humans and animals. This is more like a land of things from Halloween. I know that fiddlesticks was a failed attempt at a creation so he would be excluded from this real but his personality fits. Nocturne is specifically mentioned to be made from nightmares and was only caught when he was pulled into Runeterra. Now I will speculate that Nocturne visits Runeterra to feed on the nightmares of children/give them nightmares. Shaco is something else altogether. In his lore it even says that "A popular belief is that Shaco is not of Runeterra - that he is a thing summoned from a dark and twisted world. Still other believe that he is the demonic manifestation of humanity's dark urges..." This is exactly what I believe. Shaco was created from humanity's urges while Nocturne was created from their nightmares. Through this I believe there will be/are others from this dimension.

Now remember that there are still champions from the Shadow Isles and that this is actually a location and not on a different dimensional plane.

Gods & Deities

So what we know of Gods is very small. With the release of the new champion Illoai we learn of a new god, Nagakabouros. This seems to be the same God that almost all residents in Bligewater refer to in prayer. The Sea Goddess. Along with this God I would like to speculate about the Gods of Solari and Lunari. These are both ancient religions that I believe have Gods that exist in Runeterra. Along with this there is a man who is fighting a sea serpent on most Runeterra Maps. I would like to speculate that this is also a Sea God, but this time a man. As mentioned above Aatrox is a Darkin, could the 5 Darkin also be some type of Gods? The only other known Deities that I can think of are Bard and Soraka, Please post more about these I would love to hear theories!

Thanks everyone that made it to the end or part way through, remember to criticize it and speculate on your own!

Minor things to note, Kayle and Morgana's Lore is not canon anymore. The IoW Retcon changed it so that they were never summoned to Runeterra, and thus their Lore cannot happen. Right now they're a total blank slate. If you're operating on old Lore/Pre-IoW Retcon stuff, that's the story, but if you're trying to do it in new canon without a League or anything, it doesn't quite fly. There are a few other champions whose Lore used to be (Renekton /Nasus ) or currently is (Malphite /Taric ) "they are FROM SPAAAAAAACEEEEE and then they got summoned.", and all of that is incompatible with the new Lore.

What edition of D&D?

  • My theory on nautilus: I don't personally think the mist even affected nautilus since from his lore its just said to be black ooze but it could be mist since he was somewhere off the shores of Bilgwater. I think its just a new thing especially how Runeterra has barley explored the ocean since all the dangers except we did see some interest in the burning tides Aram map of the guy with the submarine (sorry forgot his name) so we make get more details on different creatures.

  • My personal thoughts on fizz's race disappearance : Really long theory so I will just link a board I made about it: http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/story-art/RblLXEOI-fizz-and-tahm-kench-theory-and-speculation-deals-with-time-travel-not-for-the-feint-of-mind

  • My personal thoughts on fiddlesticks: He was made in the voodoo land I believe this just because voodoo and it would make sense something so frightening was brought to life especially with dark Noxian witches/wizards/mages.

  • I do think darkins automatically are gods just because of this definition I found (in certain other religions) a superhuman being or spirit worshiped as having power over nature or human fortunes; a deity and from what we seen from Aatrox he has superhuman capabilities and does affect human fortunes by turning the tides of a war and is probably worshipped by the people he has helped.. So far we know only 3 have ever been mentioned in history kind of wish we could see the other 2 mentions are.

  • Can't really comment on the land of angels since I'm not 100 percent sure they retconned it out yet especially we haven't seen any other champions or lore updates.

Black mist Nautilus isn't from the shadow isles. He was consumed by some black substance, which many speculate to be the black mist. But he wasn't taken to the shadow isles(probably because the undeads never checked under water).Another theory is that he was corrupted by nagakabouros, the god of illaoi

Champions I actually wonder if they are going to retcon Fizz into being a marai, because sea hunter aatrox was said to be a marai who grew legs via magic,so it wouldn't be so off for fizz to be one too and there isn't much use for riot in having 2 underwater races that barely get explored. And it was confirmed by a rioter that Tahm kench is not a darkin,he is a demon, which really is something different than darkin.

dimensional planes Yeah the void has definetly a corrupting power. The new rift herald is actually a scuttlecrab(the small crab like enemy in the river) that was corrupted by the void. Fiddle and Nocturne are similar to kayle and morgana in that their lores are pretty much null at this point.Their lores get retconned eitherway,so there is that. I think Shaco could be actually a demon like Tahm kench,I mean after all shaco is the DEMON jester.

Gods and deities Well there is also Vilemaw, the spider god of Elise. Also I guess that if you count bard towards gods/deities,then you should also count Kindred

Ah yes i completely forgot about vilemaw and kindred. I'm really interested to see what Riot will be doing in the new lore and if they add lore to skins like they did for Aatrox. This would really fascinate me. Along with that I do believe that Nautilus was consumed but the black substance which I assumed followed the black mist. However I just thought that nagakabouros could have had a hand in saving nautilus from being completely consumed. Thanks for all the input and support guys!
