League of Legends had lore which, while far from perfect, still presented an interesting world which people were able to engage with and use as a vehicle for all kinds of stories concerning the characters, city-states and general factional politics that come from a setting that mashes together a vast range of cultures and ideologies. We had enough that you could pick two characters at random and probably answer most of the surface questions about how they would view each other, in some cases drawing on shared histories or parallel experiences to better fill in the blanks. We had major world events, wars, ongoing storylines and even little throwaway character building moments to show us a little more how all these characters fit into the world of Runeterra.
The lore of League of Legends has basically stagnated since 2012 but all that time we've had a series of promises from different people on the lore side of Riot that new and better things were coming. Here's one from June 2012 for example. Over the last three years we've seen more and more things that we once had disappear - League Judgements, dedicated lore AMAs, and even all lines of communication for long periods - but there's always been this understanding that Rioters were looking to do more and better things, they just didn't have the vehicle to deliver them or simply weren't at the point where they could show us what they were working on.
We've seen characters have their identities changed entirely to tell new stories that never materialise; we've seen plotlines left hanging for 3+ years; we've seen promises made and then seemingly forgotten as they're cancelled internally without any word making it to us; we've seen the most-upvoted threads of all time go seemingly unnoticed until very recently, and we've even seen the rug pulled out from under out feet as Riot pulled a grand retcon of the setting as we understood it on us. Time and time again we've seen changes come through without any visible effort to communicate with the lore fanbase either before or after the fact, despite the fact that there were efforts to keep us in the loop and stay engaged in the past. It's been demoralising, trying and it's led to an awful lot of bad blood, much of it unnecessary or overblown, between lore fans and the narrative team.
If I had to draw a comparison (Although it's hardly going to be 100% accurate) it's a little like if Riot's balance teams decided to stop trying to make an effort to explain the changes in each patch, stopped asking for any kind of feedback on what people liked about Champions before reworking their kits and refused to give us any sort of insight into their longterm plans or fix any problems that were introduced by, say, sweeping changes to the jungle and jungle itemisation.
And this went on for 3+ years, interspaced by intermittent threads stating Riot's dedication to making things better, perhaps with examples that might never actually reach the game proper.

To put it forward in the simplest way possible: We care about the lore.
Obviously it's absolutely fine that you couldn't care in the slightest about the lore of League of Legends and you're totally right that one doesn't need to know the first thing about it in order to play and enjoy the game, but all the same there are people who do care about it, do enjoy the characters and stories within it, and genuinely want to see Riot live up to their promises and generally make things better.
This isn't a movie and isn't a game like World of Warcraft but that doesn't mean its background can't have depth, nuance, an interesting and internally consistent world, and storylines that, like those that came before, show us the characters from the game interacting in ways that help us learn more about them and Runeterra as a whole.
"Lore won't help you win lane," but being interested in WoW's lore won't improve your PVP mechanics either. Just because story isn't a necessary part of the game and ultimately only appreciated by a niche audience doesn't mean it can't be good, particularly when Riot have multiple teams working on it and are willing to bring on writers like Graham McNeil to improve their product.
People love this setting and its characters. I totally understand if you don't feel the same way, but I hope you can understand that all this anger and frustration is ultimately born out of our desire to see this world live up to its potential and the sense that we've lost so much - both content and time - and ultimately either gained little or been offered things which have been either poorly explained or so very different from what we've been asking for.
We've had Rioters in the recent past encourage us to take them to task until they deliver on their promises and give us cause to feel more positive towards them and the lore, and while more open discussions like those with Bioluminescence have certainly helped, ultimately you've just got a lot of people in a walled community waiting to hear something - anything - and enured to disappointment and a general sense of being let down.
(Sorry that went a bit long. Hopefully I didn't end up rambling too far from the point.)
