Rugged Garen
I've been seeing that Rugged Garen is also a part of the RPG themed skins. can i get a link to the information?

Something we are doing from time to time is taking old popular skins and finding ways to riff off them. I've loved Rugged Garen for a long time and felt like LoL could use some more traditional fantasy skins. The new RPG skins are building upon the thematic Ruggen Garen first introduced.
I really enjoy looking back at older skin lines and trying to figure out ways to expand/improve upon them!
Do you think we could get some more Vandal skins? :D Especially for assassins like Talon or Zed because I feel like the punk aesthetic is very fitting to assassin type characters, but isn't fully realized in this game.
kindle jack its just us two i know this is an old post but have you guys ever thought about upgraded versions of a skin?
where you take a skin and can pay for more rp to get the "upgraded" version of it
say rugged garen, its a garen skin where he has a few pieces of armor, if you pay a few hundred more rp you can get the upgraded version where he has two shoulder pauldrons and a full knight helmet and you can choose which you want to equip
this was just one example
Right now Chromas are the only thing we have availible like that. It sounds kinda like DLC but for skins, and when it comes to DLC here's how I personally feel about it: If it's something that takes additional work and gives me a new way to enjoy something I already really like then it's great, but if it feels like content that should have been included in the initial cost that's cut out and sold on top then I really dislike it. So with that in mind if it's something we could do after the fact for really popular skins that players want to experience in new ways (like chromas) then I don't see why we wouldn't explore this at some point down the line.
Right now the team are still looking at what tiers/cadence we should be producing skins at, and how to create more legendary skins and new themes without burning the team out or getting repetitive. Even this far into LoL's lifetime there's so much we haven't had the time to try!
Happy to hear you'll be exploring new themes.
A lot of skins this year up until the Cosmic set and the second Dark Star set have been massive snore fests. The only skins I think of that really stood out to me were Festival Anivia and God Fist.
EDIT: thought I'd elaborate because I found the time.
Worldbreaker: Such an interesting and amazing skinline that was squandered by it's price tag. These skins had so much potential but had to be bogged down by the mediocrity that is the 750 tier.
Heartseeker 2017: These were just awful. Lucian's VFX looks nice, but the designs are the worst. They're boring, lazy and not fitting. I hate this new direction where you tried to make the Heartseeker line "Classy". There's nothing interesting about a red suit, and Quinn's is just awful in more ways then I can list here. There is a reason why people loved Heartseeker Varus, Ashe and Vayne, and the team completely failed to capture that with these skins.
RPG Skins Tier 2: Despite my gripes with the splashart being trash, these skins weren't awful per say. Bard's was funnily creative and Jayce's model changing was nice. I just realized, no wonder people hate 750 skins, they're seemingly only given to champions who need more high quality skins. It's a shame the skins team hates Sejuani. It was a smart idea to make the Karthus one 975 with new particles.
Blood Moon skins: There is a very big split on these skins. A lot of the community likes them, but a lot of the community hates them. I don't mind them myself, but they're by no means my favorite skins. Just average.
Festival Queen: Creative, Unique, Special feeling. Probably one of my favorite skins of all time. They really outdid themselves here.
Dragonslayer: Personally I despise this skin line. It's SO lazy. A guy in a suit of armor and a sexy chick. Genius, bravo, you must have spent like 1 hour working on these concepts I'm sure, that or you just looked at every other MMORPG and copied the least interesting designs.
Dreadnova: GP was great but Darius was again, another lazy attempt.
April Fools Day/Toy skin line: Super interesting and very creative. Champion choice was definitely odd but that's by no means a bad thing. I think the skins team really ended a slump here.
God Fist Lee Sin: This skin is kind of a work of art. I don't even like Lee Sin, but the animation in this skin.
Cosmic line: Super awesome and beautiful designs. A lot of care went into these, a shame about Xayah's moons, I feel like a compromise could have been met.
Dark Star: Exactly the same as Cosmic. Beautiful and amazing designs. It was nice to see the quick response to the Orianna skin. The slow reply to the Kha'Zix skin kind of felt expected though.
Upcoming:
Pulsefire Caitlyn: FUCK. ME. UP. This skin is my shit.
Pulsefire Ezreal update: Some good shit. Ult feels a little bit flat though. Not very dynamic.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Jackalopeer - taking the time to elaborate was way more helpful :)
Hey no worries. I wrote this when I was very upset. I don't regret anything, but it was not very mature. But I dug my grave, so I'll lay in it.
How many legendary skins do you people make a year?
What other themes would you like to explore, and have you tried fleshing out or connecting older skins?
Somewhere between 2 and 6? We're trying to find ways to improve our efficiency because we believe Legendary skins deliver our best player experience (outside the once-in-a-blue-moon Ultimates).
For me personally I've seen a lot of interest in Elderwood, Warden/Marauder, Arctic ops and Justicar to name a few. Something I'm working on with a few others at the moment is connecting and 'cleaning up' old skins into themes, only where it makes sense though, I wouldn't imagine we'd force things. Some skins are... special.
Also brings the most money Kappa
I'd love to see more Justicar. Idk how you'll expand on that. What skins do you plan on making into themes?
I'd really like to at least 'complete' the Justicar team. Evil champs as righteous judges is a pretty cool inversion.
By complete you mean 5 minimum? Can't think of any evil marksman. Twitch? Draven?
I'd be interested in Justicar Draven. Or Jhin. Either would be pretty sweet.
wow thanks for the reply kindlejack you really are a kindlegem (sorry)
and i understand what you mean it does have that bitter feel to it like other games that prioritzie dlc over everything else
but im just refering to the older skins that dont have the quality of your current skins now a days like rugged garen or maybe other skins that were made years ago which can be upgraded so instead of it being a 750 skin made in 2010 it can be upgraded to look like a 1350 skin in 2017 rugged garen-> knighted garen
regardless i love you and your teams work thanks for the reply ^__^
Ah I understand now. It's an interesting idea for sure! Right now our team's priority is on delivering new content, while Champion Update revisit and revitalise existing content. Both teams make little quality of life changes where we can, but we're certainly not at the state where we'd rather update older skins over making something new, Garen has so many opportunities to explore!
im very estatic for the day where riot is at endgame in terms of finishing the last champion update or the last checklist on priorities and everyone is happy with each updated champion
because then the possibilities are endless after that
it will be a good day
cheers KindleJack thanks for the talk ^__^
While this notion is a nice sentiment, it's a bit hard to take it seriously when one considers things like the Crimson Elite skin line being abandoned without explanation.
How do you reconcile trying to find ways to expand/improve on skins that were never meant to be connected, when you've already got skin lines that were always meant to be connected, but were never completed?
(And yes, I'm aware that Riot has changed around who works on what, and how you divide up work on skins, and that the people in charge of skins now aren't necessarily the people who started the Crimson Elite line, et cetera. That still doesn't change the fact that the current skin team is, by your own admission, focusing on making new offerings without visibly addressing old offerings already made and never fulfilled upon.)
I think what you're mentioning actually happens a lot at Riot. Very few of the same people work on the same thing for the past 7 years+ so things can get left behind, or can be reworked with an attitude to revitalise rather than preserve. As I mentioned in a previous post, Riot DrPh8 joined and wanted to sort of rework how Steel Legion fits in and, given that the original story wasn't socialised even internally, no one had a problem with that and was instead excited about the potential future. However the intention is, as players, to improve on things. So far the general response from players has been that it's working more often than not so that's reassuring.
It was before my time, but as far as I understand Crimson Elite was sort of the 'Cobra' to the Commando's 'G.I. Joe' skins. Unfortunately players didn't like them - so much so that the 5 was never completed. But that happens; we try new skins, 1 or 2 at a time, and sometimes they aren't what players want so we try something else. When Galio was updated we got to see how cool the Commando skins could become with the modern League Dev team, so if/when Talon or Riven get updated we might see a take on Crimson Elite that is worth investing in. For example the update to Lollipoppy certainly served as some inspiration for Candy King Ivern.
Dumb question but how do you know which skins are popular or not? Which ones are the most and least popular? Sets and one offs.
Raw data, surveys*, ongoing usage and purchase rates and a whole lot more that I'm not connected to. I always trawl through forums/comments sections of prominent websites for feedback, including reports from regional communities like Inven that I can't read myself, but I have to keep in mind that that is anecdotal when you have 100,000,000+ players. It's also pretty rare that we try a thematic only once, because there's so many factors that aren't measurable, if the team is excited by a thematic it's always worth a second shot.
Rugged Garen is my favorite Garen Skin, I hope they spruce it up a bit to fit the others now.
If you've heard that, it's not correct, as far as I know. That skin has been out for years, the RPG line just got released. He might bear resemblance to some RPG character or something, and someone likely just sort of assumed.
The LoLwiki is a wiki, so it's full of people kinda grasping at straws for what each skin is a reference to, some of them are just...nice looking skins.
Edit: nah I'm wrong my bad, read the comment below this one
Yeah,no.Rugged Garen is a part of the skin line. It's like how Jack of Hearts TF is a part of the Cards skin line even though he came out years before the rest.Except this time, they didn't update Rugged Garen's splash (which is pretty good).
I do hope they upgrade other splash arts that could be included in that line. Barbarian Sion could use a portrait to show off his beard.
Slightly related: anyone feel that the Shuriman/Arabian Katarina skin could fall into that skin line?
Sandstorm is its own skin line, with Ekko having the most recent addition to it.
Ahh. Thank you for explaining that.
Oh wow, didn't know that. I wish they'd announce that somewhere other than just Boards, but thanks for the link.
