Darkin lore and Aatrox

Mostly feel like pointing something that I find weird or absurd about the Darkin lore and Aatrox. In the Darkin lore story Twilight of the gods, we are told that "Darkin" is what people started calling the ascended when they went rogue after Azir's demise due to Xerath's interference. It is implied that "Darkin" basically exists to sully their names and was essentially imposed on them by those that wanted to kill them or seal them when killing wasn't possible. So why would Aatrox actually call himself a Darkin willingly as If it's a title he holds with pride? It just doesn't make sense.
