Just Read Act One: Thoughts Here!

Good grief.

That was amazing. Finally we get a champion/champion dialogue! I don't think we've ever had that in all of league's lore!

And how spicy! Gangplank's an artist, who knew! Graves and Fate's relationship is one hell of a classic yet fresh experience to witness! Can this get any better?!

I was really digging the switching narrative between TF and Graves. Really cool and the story just damn good imo.

Gangplank's characterization was really interesting. He's barbarous, murderous, a torturing bastard, but he gave that boy some coin and a warm meal. He's some kind of man. I dunno what kind of man, but some kind.

Some side notes I noticed: The Mother Serpent/Bearded Lady. I think this is the first time we've ever had a primary deity named in League ever. She's a legit God in Bilgewater.

Also on the event page I noticed on the skins section it was divided between event skins and Bilgewater inspired skins. What interested me was that Cutpurse and Cutthroat TF and Graves had descriptions as if they're canon; a younger Graves and TF from a time when they were partners. There's also a third icon there. Makes me wonder what this implies for Miss Sarah Fortune in the coming acts...

Honestly this is the first time I've really been interested in the lore of League. I'm into a Out of lore of other games but League just has never been able to do it. The fact I love Pirates and Hives of Scum and Villainy and anything to do with Oceans and naval related stuff probably helps.

I do wonder how much of this will end up like the Shurima event where we get introduced to all the characters and get essentially what is the start of a story of characters we already knew existed and nothing significant will really happen to them. If all we're going to get are foundation stories for the entire cast of champions well we'll be getting foundation stories for a long time at this rate.

Leblanc's Judgement had a conversation between the Matron of the Black Rose and Jericho Swain, as did the reveal of Sion's rework, and I'm sure you could find more than a few other examples if you went looking for them. It certainly isn't the first time we've had dialogue between Champions.

I'm going to reserve Judgement on this event for now because aside from Gangplank's piece, Act One ... honestly doesn't do much for me and I'm not quite sure why.

Call me cynical, but although I found it to be quite good so far, I'm yet to see if they'll live up to the promise of actually start pumping out lore semi-regularly now that they're apparently nailed down the elusive tech issue.

I also have objections over how the Journal of Justice was terminated because it was boring reading text yet this lore update is almost all text, but I digress.

I have never liked anything Rito wrote when they decided to revamp the lore. However, this one actually caught my eye, after hearing a handful of people telling me it's actually good.

I mean, it has:

  • champion/champion interaction, not some kind of champion/random person bullshit
  • you get to know how someone speaks, and the kind of personality just by reading how they narrate and do stuff. Even clues on their pasts!
  • clues that don't require language majors just to have the bare minimum idea on what the hell is going on
  • extra tidbits that you never knew, such as GP being a humble man (or at least that's what it looks like) and an artist
  • "glossary" of surrounding things, such as who the Jagged Hooks are

We need more of this kind of lore in LoL. More extra tidbit information, juicy drama of past and present relationships, and such. But I guess it did took them a while to get storytelling right...

I loved when Gangplank was explaining that "even the loyal forget their place" & "real power is about how people see you." It really meshes with the new update they're giving him. Now, you see how deeply ingrained the pirate life is for him, and why he is at the top. I have always been interested in the lores of League, and I have always loved the interconnectedness of a lot of the champions stories, especially TF and Graves. This little bit is beautiful for me.

In Regards to quality and quantity it is great!

However, if lore is still distributed in 8 month gaps, the story community is going to have at best 7 months of stagnation. I really hope Riot does awesome stuff like this every 8 months or so, but gives us something* in between for us to digest.

Otherwise we will quickly return to being all jaded without any new content to analyze/enjoy.

***Something involving old champion threads or plot progression and not new champions that are fairly disconnected (RekSai Bard ) from the lore we already have.
