A Theory on Why Maokai's VO Was Updated
Love it or hate it, Maokai got a pretty substantial VO update, but according to Riot updating a character's voice acting is too daunting a task to do on its own. With Lux, for example, they already had her voice actress in to do the Elementalist lines. So what was Maokai's voice actor doing then?
The very talented Scott McNeil is Maokai's voice, along with Hecarim, both Sion and Mecha Zero Sion (but not old Sion's joke of a voice), and Final Boss Veigar. Doing work related to any of these characters seems doubtful right now, so could it be a new character he was brought in for? I don't think that's likely either, as in my experience voice acting is typically done around two months before release (or PBE release in this case), and it's a safe bet that Riot isn't that far off either. It isn't the new Dark Star Thresh announcer, as he's voiced by somebody else.
So what's left? Well, a certain rework is coming up for a certain champion. Yes, that's right. ETERNAL LIFE. ENDLESS TORTURE. My theory is that Scott was brought in to voice the legendary Urgod for his upcoming VGU, and only time will tell if I'm right (unless a Red drops by to make fun of me). Maybe I'm overthinking things, but the design side of League of Legends has always been super interesting to me so I love theorycrafting like this!
TL;DR: I think the voice of
,
,
/Mecha Zero, etc is going to voice the upcoming
rework
TBH.
