The Story of PROJECT -Theory-
PLZ NOTE: I'm not a good theorist and this could use some fleshing out, but I decided to give it a go.
This is Katarina's splash. Look over her right shoulder (left side) between the buildings. Is that a three tentacled one eyed creature I see? Battlecast Vel'Koz. You may also notice in her splash that Zed is jumping into combat and Ashe arrows behind them, enforcing the Ashe vs Zed/Katarina.
But why would they be fighting if there's the clear threat of Battlecast?
First we go back to the reason PROJECT exists, which is most likely to combat these threats, to be the last line of defense against this mechanical menace. This is why they would sign up willingly, to defend the people. These are the heroes of their time, or people that had nothing else. They surrendered themselves for the sake of the city/world/etc.
So why are they fighting?
There are possibly two (maybe more) reasons: A) People like Ashe and Ekko are defects. They still want to fight for the cause they signed up for, but want to do it on their own free will, and they're trying to get the others (like Yi or Yasuo, maybe) to join them, and fight on their free will. Then there's agents like Kat and Zed who only seek to retrieve the defects and bring them back to have their memories erased. A.2) Since Ashe, Ekko, etc. is a defect, they're a liability, and are programmed as enemies by whoever's running PROGRAM and want them out of the way. B) Somebody on Viktor's side worked his way in and corrupted the data, getting them to join his side and fight the other projects. Zed and Katarina are on the other side.
So who's on who's side?
From what I've understood from past information and Ashe's new lines: Ashe's side: Ashe, Ekko, Fiora(?), Yi(?) Nobody/Rogue: Lucian, Yasuo, Leona Zed: Zed, Katarina
I have little information on most of them. But here's my reasoning: Lucian: Although he helped save Yi and Fiora from Zed, Ashe seemingly doesn't quite like him (I'll add the video when SkinSpotlights creates a formatted version, I'm having to assume) Fiora: I'm assuming she's working with Ashe, as what reason would she have for saving Yi if not that? Ekko: This one was more obvious, Ashe having lines clearly stating he was on her side. Yi: I'm assuming he was brought to Ashe, and she managed to convince him she was the 'good' side Leona: Hasn't revealed herself, assuming no side. Yasuo: Yasuo hasn't revealed himself as of yet (he was hidden in the panorama of all the splashes, watching) so I'm assuming he's on nobody's side. Katarina: One of her lines (on the teaser website) states 'Keep a sharp lookout for her', most likely refering to Ashe. Also shwoing fighting between her and Ashe in her splash. Zed: Zed has shown his hand by fighting Lucian/Yi/Fiora in the first cinematic, showing he's working against Ashe, or at least working to keep Yi back
TL;DR: PROJECT was to fight Battlecast, but people defected and now the PROJECTS are fighting each other rather than the actual enemy.
