... more or less what he looked like pre-ascension? Or perhaps what his current host looked like before being corrupted?

alt universe face nothing more.
As Camille Ferros states its and alternate universe, so it may not be 100% accurate to what he looked like in the canon timeline (e.g. hair colour and length). However, I don't think Riot would have just given him a face when a regular blood moon face would have worked equally as well.
Although, it is also possible that this is a representation of the face of Aatrox's current host in canon timeline, and not a representation of Aatrox's himself.
