new champ lore

does anyone else think that the lore in league recently has been lacking? I feel like the characters reasoning for joining the league lately has been minimal. don't get me wrong i love the new champs and their kits, but i think that for the most part their stories are lacking a certain amount of depth that they once did. it may just be me not paying attention to lore enough and seeing interwoven stories and that sort of thing, but what do yall think about this? do i need enlightenment or does Rito?

That would be because the League of Legends does not exist within the world of Runeterra and thus there is no need to tie new Champions to it.

Then what about the videos?Ekkos comic?the diary entries about Rek'sai?The Sion promo page?Or the bigger lore pieces that were released on the boards?

Oh ye, because videos give much story about champs, like bard one did, right? WRONG!

Those things are supplementary pieces to lore, which is not there. Lore has to be ingame, it has to be written, it has to be there! Videos and pretty baubles do not replace lore!

because you can read the text while you are playing right? Where is the difference if you look at those in the client or on the official site?Where is the big difference in reading a text that tells you a story and watching a video(or looking at the other lore pieces)?

Also the old lore gave us so much information about champions like Shaco right?Oh wait it didn't....

Not saying that the lore is easily avaliable though,it is currently all over the place and hard to find if you don't know where to look.

Because these videos show nothng of worth. Look at bards video and tell me what does it tell about him.

I shouldnt have to fcking dig everywhere to find pieces of lore, it should be in the client, where the character bios are. Not 3 sentences but full paragraphs.

There is a huge difference between old lore and the new one. What is it you may ask? Previous lore was substantial, you could have 1000 words and more describing a champ, now we have those "videos" for bard which tell shit.

Before we had a fully realised world with IOW, now we dont even fcking know whats proper canon anymore because last lore was so deeply involved with IOW.

We know from Bards video that Noxus did already invade ionia before,that they were trying to aquire a magical artifact,that was taken by bard and that he records these things in the stars.We also know from his promo site,that he recorded the regin of the watchers(which finally gives us a picture of a watcher),the fall of shurima and the transformation of the shadow isles and it also tells us that Ionia actually has floating islands.His short lore also establishes,that scholars on runeterra are aware of him and that he does these things to protect the cosmic balance of the world. So yeah in the end Bard got more lore than Shaco ever had.

Like I said,the actual way to find the lore is messed up and its also bothersome that many things are in a weird limbo where we can't say if its canon or not,I agree with you in those points.

But you overlook the problems with the old lore and ignore everything not in the client.

Yes, i am bit biased, we all are. But it is not enough to cloud my judgement. THe new lore implements cinematics and simmilar things. But these are not enough, these are not stories.

Look at bards cinematic, it says nothing. What is bard, who is he, how he acts nothing! THe guy with whom i argued now said that shaco wasnt fleshed out. But he was.

I see so many people arguing that the new lore is better and the old one is shit, but once we discuss old lore they show that they have no idea about the old lore.

If narrative comes up with something good after retconning like 80% of the old lore, then i will praise them. But we still have an unfinished world with some characters in limbo with their stories, with only some new characters having any personality, but having next to 0 backstory.

And i am the one which doesnt know about the lore? Google up shaco and find information about him, you will find more than enough lore.

Lol,his lore literally just tells us that he is a psychotic assassin for hire.

There was a whole section in the JoJ where Shaco was interviewed,it ended with shaco not giving one answer to anything,telling us absolutely nothing and stabbing the reporter.

If they're really exculsive to Riot's new AU, then they're not lore. Plus, none of those are acessible from any official lore directory. The only thing you'll get if you go searching for Lore, directly on Riot's League of Legends homepage, are the Champion bios.

Some of which aren't even Bios and tells you next to nothing about who or what the Champion is.

And some of which are half a paragraph long with no information relevant to their ability to fight in the League of Legends.

And some of which are just poorly written.

And then you have the untouched bios which haven't been hit with the wrecking ball yet.

Like I said,the fact that these lore pieces are hard to find(unless you look on the wiki),really sucks. Same goes for the champs who didn't receive an updated bio,but got their lores replaced by their short lores anyway.

But saying "it is new lore,so it sucks" by default is simply wrong and generalizing. If you think like this,then you should stop caring about the lore altogether,because the old one isn't coming back and you won't enjoy the new one simply because you are against it from the get go.

If I watch a movie and have decided already,that the movie is gonna suck,then I won't be able to enjoy the movie,regardless of how good it is.

I like the new stuff they release.

Doesn't change the fact that a setting with no League in it, where the game doesn't happen. Isn't Lore by virtue of not being story elements expanding on the story from the game.

Why is is this so hard for people to get?

Lore isn't just what-ifs, it's facts. An AU isn't lore.

And the new setting is an AU, it's not a retcon (firstly because they've released no material incompatible with the old material, secondly because removing the setting from a story isn't retroactive continuity, it's just removing stuff period.), it's not a reboot (a reboot requires you keep the old themes and core story elements, which they openly stated they wouldn't). It's just a completely different thing.

As someone who joined mostly for the lore (It was excactly what i've been looking for in a video game story the last 6 years after all), I feel thoroughly cheated, marginalized and well, lied to.

Because stating something which isn't actually the case is a lie.

They lied about their own setting details to make it more acceptable to throw them out. Either that or they just didn't know their own setting at all, I prefer the former because that doesn't paint them as thoroughly uncapable of doing their job.

As far as i'm concerned, until I see the new setting (which I'm guessing is never really, they don't seem interested in talking about it, and if they had a new setting they ought to have been smart enough to release the core details of it ASAP after the retcon announcement), there is no new lore.

Until they create a new story for the game League of Legends, the old one is stil canon.

Which is perfect because the old one is just what I've been looking for the last 6 years.

If they do get around to revealing their new game-unconnected setting, then that still isn't lore. It's an AU.

That doesn't change because anyone says different, it just means they don't know what they're talking about.

We were never concerned about the quality of the new produced material, we were concerned with the integrity of their storytelling since they've now proven they're not above lying openly aout the details of it in order to change it to whatever they want. (just wait until they stop liking this new story and decide to toss it out of the window with glaring factual errors, they've already done it once and people supported them in it for some reason. I see no reason why it won't happen again.)

I just hope they stay the fuck away from the game, if they really want their stories to be free of the game they're promoting with them, then let the game be free of their stories.

At least we still have Factions.

Well, Riot stopped doing lore and started doing random unrelated unconnected short stuff instead.

At least for the last 10 months.

We'll see what the Bilgewater event brings about, and whether it's gonna be actually lore relevant, develop the new setting at all. Or if it's just gonna be as empty as the Shurima event was, stripping a good amount of suddenly Bilgewater related Champions of their in-client Bios and then fizzle without any sort of conclusion.

And then we get to wait another year while they steadily pluck away the bios of reworked champions and continue to flash and forget new ones with short random segments.
