Why not go for a "beefier" poppy? @Riot

Champion Insights: Poppy, Keeper of the Hammer

First, let me say I like the new poppy, and I'm looking foreward to playing her :D

That said, I'm a bit disappointed by how similar she looks to tristana, face-, voice- and body-wise. She was a good opportunity to show a yordle with a more muscular build, maybe with a rounder face and a stronger chin (not unlike how pre-rework she was the "ugly yordle"). But with the rework, she was made very cute (and looks a lot like tristana post-rework). What made me sad is seeing that you had concept pointing that way, e.g. the image in the banner of her hcampion insigt article: http://euw.leagueoflegends.com/sites/default/files/styles/wide_medium/public/upload/po-ins-banner.jpg

Was there some specific reason for this decision? I can't see any in the champion insight. Maybe yordles are just cute by definition?

Thanks patmax17

I have to say that as much as I am looking forward to playing the rework also, I completely agree. I don't know why Poppy seems to have been made into a vanilla flavoured cute yordle when she felt unique before. I thought her differences were going to be emphasized but instead she's much more of a trope than she was before. The appearance doesn't bother me as much as the new voice-over, I know the old one wasn't good but Poppy was definitely never happy go lucky, self depreciating or cute. She came across to me as being confident, gruff and humourless and deep voiced for a yordle female and I liked it. It feels a bit bland now :/

They had to appeal to every weab in existence with that snaggletooth.

If you look closely at that concept art, then you'll notice that she isn't that different. Her arms are still rather thin(she just has some oversized armor),which is pretty much how her arms are now,the main differences are the slightly different hair style and the slightly different eyes(the poppy in that concept art has even bigger eyes, than the actual rework, but in that concept art they look rather calm and cold)

She wearing a lot of armor. She could have a ton of muscle under it.

Pretty sure the new look (I'd argue pretty obviously) is to go with her new personality and voice. Her personality and everything is that much more endearing when you add the cute look into the equation. I personally like it, cute is naturally more appealing than not-cute and cute is definitely what yordles are more geared towards.

Yeah screw this rework. All new female champs should come out as unattractive as possible. In addition all current females should be remodeled into female urgots so that women in real life don't feel challenged by their appearance.

While being an ugly character is cool in its own way, I don't feel like Poppy is the right champion for that. Poppy is supposed to be "small body, big heart- The Champion". There was literally no reason why she was ugly before aside from "because her original designer didn't really know what they were doing and decided that she would be ugly".

Personally I like her design but I see what you're saying. If I were to venture a "reason" (not to put words in Riot's collective mouth), they did mention a few times how Poppy is supposed to be the sort of "unsuspecting hero", that she does not even realize her own strength and potential.

Poppy’s been tasked with delivering a legendary hammer to a hero who will become legend....but never suspects the hammer might have found the right person already

Poppy’s kit’s designed to show off her might despite her diminutive stature

There were a few other lines floating around but I can't find them at the moment, but they've suggested this sense of "unknown power" with her. So I think the tilt towards small, petite Yordle wielding a BFH was deliberate, and having her just look like a beefy, visually-strong Yordle would take away from that goal.

I guess that it's intended to be just a little yordle in order to emphasize the "unexpected hero" thematic of her also visually.
