Varus: A Name of Regret
Varus: archer, previous warden of corruption and Roman Govenor?
While the Varus of League was not a Roman Govenor, he does share some interesting similarities with the real life person Publius Quinctilius Varus. But first a quick refresher on Varus.
Varus was an Ionian archer of great repute. He was tasked by Ionian leaders to guard a great pit of corruption. When Noxus invaded Ionia Varus had to make a decision, defend the pit or save his village. He chose to guard the pit and slaughtered many Noxian troops. After the battle he threw himself into the pit to gain the power to seek vengeance upon Noxus.
Quinctilius Varus was a Roman Politician. He did several interesting thing in his life but The Battle of Teutenburg Forest is what he is remembered for. The short story, he led three Roman Legions, or 15,000 troops to their deaths at the hands of Germanic tribes. When all hope was lost for the Romans Varus committed suicide. Varus loss to the Germans was so great that the Roman Empire would never recover. The Empire would never again defeat the Germans East of the Rheine and Augustus Ceaser is said to have been heard banging his head against walls and shouting "Varus, give me back my legions!" If you want to learn more about The Battle look here https://youtu.be/kmF3VBA_RcM.
Both Varus' were given an important job that they ultimately failed to do, commited suicide afterwards, and failed their homelands.
(I also find it slightly hilarious to think of Ionian leaders banging their heads on walls and shouting "Varus, give me back my corruption!!!")
