A small solution to a problem with League's lore
I hate shooting/racing movies. It's not because I dislike guns or cars, but instead because very few have meaningful and original character development and interactions. For me almost every book, movie, and game is all about the characters that the media creates, putting me in another world. So when I first started playing League about a year ago, I used to always go through and read the champion bios, trying to learn who these cool champions were and how they were related. And as time went on, I was just so disappointed. No where on the LoL site nor client did I ever find a reason for this world, which is OK. What really bothered me was the lack of context for the interactions between the champions. On the bios it arbitrarily lists allies and enemies, but never explains how the champions actually interacted. Are they just allies on the rift because they have similar values, or by a connection on Runeterra? It's those connections between the characters that gives a world depth and meaning, but there's none of that in League.
My goal here isn't to just point at a huge problem (we all know there already is one) but instead start a meaningful discussion on how to solve it. What I would like to see is simply better communication of lore that already seems to exist. Runeterra is a whole world that's been created, with countries that have different strengths and histories. I would love to see a map. A map that has the city-states (Demacia, Ionia, Bildgewater, Shadow Isles, etc.) with their borders and labels, and that it would be interactive. You could click on the one you're interested in and view the champions that are from there, the history of the country, it's enemies and allies and why. In this you would also largely get an explanation as to why some champs are allies and enemies, but restating their specific interaction under the champions own lore would also be beneficial. For instance, if you were to click on Leblanc and go to her lore, it would list Swain as an ally who you could then click and text would appear explaining the nature of their relationship. Then if you click swain again, you would be linked to his champion page.
LoL is a great and fun game, but never have I actually felt a personal connection to a champion I was playing. The closest I've come was with Ammumu after watching his music video. I was so happy when Rito made it and still love it, but ultimately Ammumu still fails at being a character to me because I've never seen him interact with another. Characters don't stand in their own world, so lets stop treating them like it.
