Skarner, His Race, and What Riot could Do to Introduce More of Them

I think it would be cool if Skarners Skarner character was more fleshed out. Keep his original motivation of preserving his race and being a Vangard to make sure it is safe for his peoples return. One thing you could do is make it an event. For example maybe another Vanguard or several other Vangards awaken heralding the beginning of "The Return."

One thought that came to my mind was who are the Brackern and how do they reproduce? I had an interesting idea concerning the Arachia in Skarners Skarner ret-conned lore: the mysteriously powerful crystal that granted Skarner his power and wisdom. It is also what the Brackern need to find and bond with or they will die. I think these Arachia shouldn't just be crystals. They are actually the other half of the Brackern race. From this idea I steadily began to create a cycle of birth death and reproduction for this enigmatic race. Here's how it works.

Geodes: These hollow stony spheres are eggs that contain Brackern embryos. The Geodes them selves will eventually become mature Arachia once a lifeform to model an exoskeleton for a future Brackern is placed in side after they hatch. (think mosquito trapped in amber)

Crystal Spires: these large crystalline Obelisk habitats act as nurseries for Geodes (eggs) . These areas are created, seeded, and protected by the diverse and mobile Brackern. The are often characterized by generating a "creep" of Crystal matrices and colonies that spread around the circumference of the ground they protrude from; supplying nourishment to Geode, Brecci, and Brackern alike.

Brecci: This is the larvae state of immature Brackern. This is when they are at their weakest physically and intellectually and many of them look the same. Their basic function is to relocate and monitor hatched (geodes) to places where lifeforms will wander inside, so the blueprints of the lifeforms DNA will be used to model the next generation of Brackern. (Scorpions will make scorpion looking Brackern, Centipedes will make Centipede like Brackern, beetles, ants, etc) Once a creature wanders inside they are put into stasis and locked inside the Geode. An elder Brackern nearing the end of his "Cycle" will make pilgrimage with this Geode into the depths of the earth. The Elder Brackern will continue to dig as deep and as far as it can before it dies. It is believed that the closer the Geode is to the center of the Earth the more time it can be given to mature and produce very strong, intelligent, and healthy Brackern. The Arachia that were formed over the longest periods of time in the deepest parts of the Earth produce the strongest Brackern aka Vanguards.

Arachia: Considered the Female side of the race. Mature Arachia are powerful crystalline living organisms that draw magical power, energy, mana and knowledge from the Earth. They form and acquire this knowledge over the thousand year geological cycles and tectonic forces that shape the Earth.
They are immobile (like coral reefs for example) but they seem to possess a level of sentience not well understood by other races. They are sources of life and collective wisdom to the Brackern and must be protected at all costs.

Brackern: the final stage of a Brecci. Once a Brecci reaches its adolescent stage its reserves begin to deplete and if it doesn't seek out and bond with an Arachia soon it WILL die. The journey is hazardous however, because there's only one place mature Arachia can be found; deep DEEP within the Earths mantle. Many Breccis reserves will deplete long before they can find their chosen Arachia and others might perish from the crushing pressures of the deep and intense heat. 1/10 Brecci perish in this attempt, and even fewer (1/100) are fortunate enough to bond with the Arachia that have been formed over tens or even hundreds of thousands of years (the kind that will birth a Vanguard. If they do however the Brecci will bond with the Arachia, creating an impressive crystal spire that rises from the ground and breaches the surface. Their form now resembles the life form that was trapped within the Geode and the knowledge that was obtained from the Arachia is shared with the rest of his kind. The newly minted Brackern is stronger, posessess sentient levels of intelligence and now assumes the role of protector and guardian of his crystal colony. Thus the cycle continues.

Vanguards: The elite class of Brackern. They are the wisest strongest and most enduring specimens. To fight a Brackern is fool hardy. To anger a Vanguard is to risk utter annihilation. In addition to their sheer strength and nigh indestructible exoskeletons they are masters of terrestrial arcana. They can awaken dormant volcanoes, trigger earthquakes, produce intense sound vibration and frequencies, utilize piezoelectricity as a weapon, and even create enormous sinkholes that can swallow entire cities.

After seeing you wonder how they reproduce, I couldn't help but remember Nappa in dragon ball z abridged. "I want to see them breed" lol.

You interpretations and ideas are REALLY cool.

I would absolutely love to see more of the Brackern. I like to think that the magical energy that formed the other anthropomorphic beings in Runeterra (Rengar, Wukong, Rammus, etc...) also birthed the first Brackern, but much, much longer ago.

The only concern I have with your idea, and it's a tiny nitpick, is on different types of Brackern. I don't think there would be other insect types, simply because Scorpions are not insects, they're arachnids. I would, however, like the idea of Spider based Brackern. Maybe even a whip spider or whip scorpion, just to diversify it a bit. And I certainly would be open to the idea of another Brackern champion.

I think, whoever the Brackern were, that RekSai and the other Xer'sai, being subterranean creatures, would come in conflict with Skarner and the Brackern very often.

On the nitpick the diversity of the brackern: What they can be is not limited to any one family of animal (like arachnids) . It can literally represent anything so long as the organism can fit into a Geodes shell whiich can vary in size but some can be quite large. It just happens that smaller animals tend to be more common. However A Brecci might even put a dragons egg in a Geode for example...

I thank you for your enthusiasm regarding my interpretation, despite the slight miscommunication.

I just think it should be a bit limited so people don't get confused on what a Brackern actually is. If you see Skarner (crystalline scorpion), then see, for example, a crystalline worm or crystalline grasshopper, there wouldn't be much to indicate that they were of the same species besides them both being crystalline.

You bring up a valid point I suppose. But the fact that all of them sharing the same characteristic of being crystalline as opposed to organic should be a dead giveaway that the creature is a Brackern. At the same time you dont want to be too limiting. There are only so many iterations of Arachnids you can choose from a design standpoint after all.

Still I think you could do some really cool design choices with the crystals outside of that one group. Like how cool would it be to play as a Crystalline Stag/Hercules beetle, Praying mantis, a Crab, a Tarantula, Elephant, porcupine, centipede etc.

That would definitely make for some interesting conflict and story arcs. Thank you for adding your input.

Didn't read anything, but instead of seeing more of Skarner's race. I want to see more darkins, like Aatrox. Just my opinion tho. [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

Palinchron1 votes

I'd like to see more Dakin too. I love Aatrox as much as I do Skarner, but I feel its pretty much a given that Riot wil reveal more Darkin in the future. This is a discussion about the potentia lfor Skarners race and more Brackern that could be added to the roster so I'm a little confused as to why you'd click on the link and comment if your only interested in Aatrox.

SpartenA79911 votes

Mostly hoping if this does go major it will people would agree with me on more darkins. They seem more interesting personally. If you'd like, I can delete these comments if you want. Up to you.

I consider myself an Aatrox -main and lore freak but my opinion is that new darkins wouldn't be a good idea. There are only 5 darkins left, if rito made another into champion, people would question: 'why not third, why not all?' Of course we know that they all are insanely powerful, they should all be champions lore-wise. (tho I think it would be boring to have 5 aatrox-style champs, the uniqueness, what is it?)

In Skarner's case (and OPs suggestion) the brackern would be an enormous civilization with more diversity. Like yordlesTeemo Gnar and void creaturesChogath Velkoz alike.

Taric and Skarner are listed as Friends.... Maybe we could have the Gem Knight in his new lore as well

That could be an option, but we'll have to wait and see what direction Riot would take with Taric. There is still much potential for them to be allies though.

I actually really like this idea for their race. If they had an event involving the possible extermination of his race, and how they stop it (or don't?) that would be epic.

I like the idea of there being more champions of the various fantasy races we have available, but at least in the case of Skarner I'd think it to be a waste as Riot has said time after time that their greatest challenge they've had with selling Skarner is him being what he is, most people just aren't interested in playing a Scorpion monster.

Ofcourse you bring up aa good arguement that it is much easier for people to gravitate and connect with a human character or one who mostly resembles a human character and their qualities, howeve I dont think that Skarner being completely inhuman is sufficient enough grounds to claim that is the sole and major factor for his relative unpopularity and thus that should be a basis or not expanding on his raace at all. As a matter of fact bc of the inhumanity of Skarner Riot actually ended giving him a much more compelling, rich, and intersting backstpr than they otherwise would have (The pre retcon lore anyway). The other important factor is gameplay, something that Skarner has always had a massive issue with and still does to this day. I would argu that Skarner is unpopular not "bc he is an unrelatable Scorpion" but rather more to his deeply flawed gameplay design and how poorly it was handled with subsequent uninspired reworks. Another point I would bring up to counter the assertion about people being uninterested in playing monsters is that Riot has created many Void monsters in the game. If that is their official justification against creating more Brackern than they seem to be contradicting themselves.

While I agree that Brackern should be more creatures than just scorpions, your suggestion of geodes and imprinting DNA sounds too similar to Transformers: Beast Wars to me.

The concept has been done before, but that doesn't stop Riot from making things in their game that are famailiar to us outside the game (Pantheons basically that guy from 300 or Shaco is basically just a knockoff of the Joker) It doesnt have to be a purely original idea. what matters is does it make sense and could we see it working. I think this way of explaining their diversity is much more interesting than just saying "Oh ummmm MAgic!" or "The ywere all just primitive scorpions who happened to a the right radioactive pool at the right time!" the latter basically being cannon for the origin of Skarners race whcih seemed a little limiting and silly to me.

Well I agree all art is derivative to some degree at this point. Nothing is made in a vacuum but is inspired or commenting on what came before it. It's just that this particular idea feels just as inelegant as the transformer's variant. Its too literal in implementation for my tastes.

Edit: Literal isn't quite the right word I'm looking for but perhaps "clinical" is closer. It's just that your explanation just doesn't feel natural. It saps Skarner's story of its rawness. But that's just my opinion and I'm trying to maintain the tone of his story where as you're trying to explain something that doesn't require it. Ultimately I think its a shame to remove the mystery and tragedy of skarner by trying to flesh out his origin scientifically.

If the idea does not appeal to you I cant change your mind. That is fine, though I am now curious as to what your proposed alternative would be.

Okay, If we suppose that all crystals/gems can naturally absorb and become powerful sources of magic/energy/life force then I'd maintain that Skarner was made in to the Crystal Vangaurd through sacrificing his own life. Sentient creatures that aren't naturally made of crystal but through ritual are given immortality so that they may guard their kind.

In a few ways this is stepping on the toes of the Ascended in Shurima, but Skarner seems to have been rewritten to be from there. My own headcannon would make Kalamanda a secret underground city near Shurmia. A faction of shurmia that fractured off to live underground in this natural crystal cave system that became forgotten once Shurima was destroyed alla Xerath. Their culture evolved and became distinct from shurima but similarities would be natural to this offshoot.

They discovered when they died their souls/life essence would enter the crystals around them. They were essentially trapped; if those people revered their dead they would be tasked with protecting these crystal tombs. Vangaurds are both honored and cursed to protect both the living and dead. Perhaps their forms are chosen from the strong fauna around them or by happenstance skarner's essence was combined with that of scorpion. Technically not important only that skarner remains remains both separate and of his people.

Really well-thought out lifecycle of the Brackern. I would love to see another Brackern added, as well as some new lore behind them (as all we currently have that we know isn't retconned is severely lacking in intrigue and detail).

I think there could be a possible connection between RekSai and Skarner , or at least their respective races. Perhaps the Brackern are some sort of mutant descendants of the original Xer'Sai? Maybe the Brackern were molded to help combat the invading Voidborn?

I'm hoping that when Riot finally updates the Shuriman Champions' lores, they'll expand upon our beloved crystal scorpion's background. I hope that they'll at least have it have some semblance to his original story, as I don't care much for him being "typical guardian monster #428".
