Run-down of the skins getting a splash art update for the Champion VU list

NOTE: This post is for Reav3 I'm making this in order to know which skins are getting a new splash art (this is for the list of champion VUs that Reav3 posted a while back)

Here's the list (in no particular order): Nidalee, Trundle, Tristana, Sion, Miss Fortune, Alistar, Kassadin, Gangplank, Twitch, Fiora, Karthus, Maokai, Karma, Garen, Morgana, Sivir, Sona, Annie, Renekton, Nasus & Heimerdinger.

Now I will make a run-down for each skin getting a new splash art: Nidalee - French Maid, Pharaoh, Bewitching, Snow Bunny and Leopard Trundle - Traditional, Junkyard and Lil'Slugger Tristana - Riot Girl, Rocket Girl, Buccaneer, Firefighter, Guerrilla and Earnest Elf Sion - Lumberjack, Hextech, Barbarian and Warmonger Miss Fortune - Secret Agent, Road Warrior, Waterloo, Cowgirl and Candy Cane Alistar - Black, Golden, Matador. Am I missing any @Reav3?

Now, here are my 2 questions for you Reav3.

  1. Is there any particual Reason to include Morgana on the list?
  2. Who else is on the list?

To be clear, this is just a list that we would like to get too, if time and resources permit. Things can always change and strategies can always change, which can change resource allocation. So these all aren't guaranteed to get done, and also could go at a slow pace as big VGU's always take priority (For example we had to put a temporary hold on these old skin splashes to get Tarics new skin splashes out the door.)

For the time being though our goal is to get through as many of these as we can. Now about your questions.

Are you missing any?

Ones you added that we weren't planning on updating (Though this could always change)

Rugged Garen Dreadnaught Garen

Is there any particular Reason to include Morgana on the list?

She's on the list since we did a minor VU on her and we had a nearly complete Blade Mistress Splash. We decided to just finish the Blade Mistress one though and ship it so she went down considerably in priority. We may just exclude her from the list and will re asses when we get trough some of the greater offenders.

Who else is on the list?

That's the current list. Not to say we won't ever update any other splash art as things tend to change over time, but for now that's the list.

Silent Night Sona is one of my favourite splashes in the game and it's not even poorly drawn and it's really Christmassy :( Does it really need an update? Can understand all the other Sona skins you're looking at (glad Arcade is getting attention in particular) but Silent Night is wonderful already.

what about Headmistress Fiora and Goth Annie tho?

Headmistress Fiora splash art is pretty high quality already and doesn't really look that different from the model. Goth Annie splash is high quality as well.

What about Master Yi? The quality is fine, sure! But his base-splash doesn't match his in-game model at all, and a couple of them are arguably a different style than splashes usually are.

Wait, why would Ghostbride Morgana need an update? It's perfectly up to date, I think. You guys made it in 2013.

Also, is there a particular reason Singed is not included? He got a MTU back in 2014 and you only updated his base splash. :P

Pretty sad that they would consider changing Ghost Bride, which is pretty much the best Morg Splash besides the new Blade Mistress, and not change the terrible Lunar Wraith splash that doesn't even do its job of really showing off the skin even if it's brand new.

Really, really happy with the BM splash btw, I hate the skin itself but I'm likely to buy it just because of the splash now. The only Morg skin I was missing (my main <3).

Ghost Bride Morgana seems like it meets today's standards and is pretty high quality. I can't say the same for Rugged Garen, though. I feel like that splash really needs an update, it's just as bad as some of the other splashes the team has replaced; the quality of that splash is just visibly lower.

What about Irelia? You guys have been teasing the new splash since 2014.

I was responding about the specific splashes the Champion Update team is taking on, which is specifically to go back to old champions we updated visually and give them matching new splashes. There are other illustrators at Riot though and other splashes that aren't on this list could still get updated by other teams.

So since Irelia hasn't been given a visual update there's still a chance a different team would release her new splash?

Yeah, of course. While Champion update helped with some of the recent splashes from this patch, many of those were worked on by illustrators all over Riot.

On a sidenote; Is Lord Mordekaiser being updated? Seeing that its splash has been swapped with the (imo inferior) chinese version?

TBH honest probably not. Anything is possible though. The reason we wouldn't update this is because Morde is fairly high on our list for a full VGU and we don't have any "in progress" Skin splashes for Morde. One we do get around to doing a VGU on him, he would of course get ALL new splashes.

excluding King of Clubs Mordekaiser obviously

Actually if we did a full VGU we would probably update Morde only in that splash, but not change the splash completely. Shen didn't change enough to warrant editing the TPA splash. With Yorick we will probably just edit Yorick in the Pentakill splash but not redo the splash from scratch.

But, will you fix his position in the client splash? (Currently, Pentakill Yorick is mostly obscured by the huge amount of available skins for him. It's almost as if Riot doesn't want to acknowledge his existence...)

I'm sorry, are you avoiding my questions about Master Yi's base splash? :( There are pretty big discrepancies between it and the updated model from 2013, but perhaps you have already checked it out and made the call not to update it?

Do you have plans to release any VU this year(like him Karthus )? At the moment you focus more on reworks (VGU) .... unfortunately ...

Thanks for clarifying this^^ It does make me wonder if it would be of any use to spark a conversation as of what people expect in case of a future Mordekaiser rework. I did enjoy the few threads about Taric in particular IronStylus started to gather intel on what people like about Taric.

(This might just be me trying to justify creating yet another Mordekaiser thread)

King of Clubs Mordekaiser is a new skin, so no it won't need updating (art wise, the splash art is fine but he would only change, as Reav3 already mentioned)

I'd really like to hear a comment on Master Yi's base splash. It doesn't match his post-update model, but maybe you still don't plan to change it?

I want to ask: Are you guys going to treat Nasus, Sivir, Cass and Renekton like full VGUs from now on? I was teased by Galactic Renekton so...

I guess this also means we'll hopefully reach Karthus and Maokai too down the line!

If you update rugged Garen, you could combine the splash with barbarian Sion like how you did the RPG skins.

What about Xerath's splash arts? They're outdated too.

You would change Ghost Bride? It was only done in 2013, doesn't look that far off from other skin/champions that are out that.

Is arcade sona in that bad a shape to need updating? I personally think it looks fine even if it isnt the newest quality. That's just me.

Please, don't change Arcade Sona's splash art. I think it's perfect and I like it to the point that it was a huge positive factor when I decided to buy the skin.

If we threw in Singed, Tryndamere, Ashe?, Janna, Kayle, Twisted Fate, Sejuani and Master Yi

you'd have a lot more skin splashes to update

but what Dwarven said, why isn't Singed on the list?

I think it's a mistake to change the traditional skins. Those skins kept their characters' original art to be a throwback to what they once were. To change them would be a disservice to the skins, because they're meant to represent champions that frankly no longer exist. Trundle wouldn't be the same without that splash. When that goes, his character truly dies. Same for Karma. Please don't change the Traditional splashes...
