History and How Riot has used some

So I was studying Western Civilization Volume 1: To 1715 for my history class when I stumbled across information that I found to be quite interesting.

Ionia and Darius both were real things.

A quick look at Wikipedia helped to confirm this. Ionia was a collection of small Greek City States called the Ionian League of Greek settlements and was located around where present day Turkey is. It was a coastal strip mostly surrounded by The Black Sea and Medditerian Sea. These states fell to the Persian Empire in the mid-sixth century. After Athens helped in a failed revolt by the Ionian States in 499 B.C.E. the Persian King turned his attention towards Greece.

This Kings name, was Darius. He led his army of light infantry to Greece where he confronted and lost to the Greek hoplite soldiers at Marathon. The Persians would not mount another attack for ten years due to political reasons as well as the death of Darius. When the Persians returned they were led by the Persian King Xerxes.

Ultimately these names and some of the ideas from history have resurfaced in Riots lore for League. That is something I find fascinating and I wanted to share that with anyone interested.

Thanks for your time and have a great day! Also if you know of anything other people, events or places that Riot may have drawn on for idea I would love to hear it!

There's a bunch of history in names and designs. Actually it's common in all fiction that you steal relentlessly from history.

The obvious:

Xin Zhao is based off of Zhao Xin a Chinese commander that surrendered to the Han dynasty.

Atreus (Pantheon's meat suit) is named after the father of Menelaus and Agamemnon.

Diana is the Roman name for Artemis the goddess of the moon and the hunt.

While Leona's shield had the Macedonian sun symbol at the top.

Which is a neat little detail that makes the three true Targonian champions represent Greece, Rome, and Macedonia the three major Hellenistic influenced ancient cultures. We'll just ignore Taric and Sol for this parallelism.

Olaf was a king of Norway.

Yorick is named after the Shakespeare character of course.

There's probably a lot more I'm missing.

Something else to think about is that all the Shurmian Acsended characters are based on Egyptian gods. Nasus is Anubis, Renekton is Sobek and Azir is both Ra and Aten. And Xerath is.....probably somebody

Most Ionian and Mount Targon names are real names.

Oh another one that a different thread reminded me of. Fiora is probably a feminization of Fiore a famous Italien fencing master.
