The Disappearance of magic.

So we learned in Galio's lore that mages are becoming rarer. He believes that it is because they are being driven extinct by him squishing them all, but I wonder if that is true?

Or is the cause of this disappearance Ionia hoarding magic? Xayah mentions magic used to be everywhere, and I'm curious whether that includes Western Valoran. Assuming the Ursine are also vastayan; how does this affect them?

dropping this into the op so people can listen to what I'm talking about.

It's probably because of the rise of hextech. You don't need to know magic to use hextech so it makes sense that less people would bother with it

Im not sure the Ursine are Vastayan. For one thing, they are explicitly given their own name, and they live far from Ionia. It makes sense for Rengar and Nidalee (both Vastayans) to live far away, given that they are individuals, and each have their own agenda, but I dont see an entire race migrating away. I think the Ursine are just another race, like the trolls or Fizz's race.

Another thing to consider, is that the Ursine's magic seems very different from Ionian magic. They are mystics, and use the power of thunder, something that we haven't really seen that much in Ionia.

I think that what the lore means by Magic being rarer, is that there are not nearly as many mages as their once were (at least in Valoran, IDK about Ionia), but the few mages that there are are extremely powerful. Syndra is a good example of this. It might also be because of Ryze hiding a lot of world runes, which might have been indirect causes of all the magic before.

Magic has also evolved greatly in Runeterra, especially in recent years. Hextech is pretty much Crystal magic (the kind used by Skarner and the structures on SR.) harnessed by people with no knowledge of magic. Non-hextech technology, as rare as it is, is also pretty much magic. The things that Viktor, Heimerdinger and Ziggs are all essentially magical.

It's a common trend in fantasy universes, the decay of magic

Discworld, Middle-Earth, Mystara...

Mages are not the source of magic, they are just users and people infused or born with it. Magic will always exist as an entity and there can always be new magic users
