Do the Darkin choose their weapons or not?

In Aatrox's new lore, he's bound to a weapon without choice. Yet in his special interactions toward Varus and Rhaast, he says that they CHOSE those weapons. He also says that he himself chose a sword, "the noblest of weapons". Which leaves me extremely confused. Why would they choose what weapon they'd be bound to, before they're bound to it? Aatrox, Rhaast, and Varus are brothers. So Aatrox would obviously know what they fought with back when they were in the war against the Void. So why is Aatrox surprised by the weapons that they have now?

It's less that they chose what weapons they were bound to, and more that they were bound to the weapons they chose to use before becoming Darkin.

Also I'm fairly certain they're not literally brothers.

The new lore is inconsistent even with Aatrox's VO. This new lore feels incredibly rushed and out of sync with everything. For instance, Aatrox mentions the "aa" thing to Varus - which is now stupidly irrelevant since the Darkin are now former Ascended. It made more sense if they were outsiders of the world.

I'm pretty sure it said they did choose their weapons in the lore.

Sure he'd have an idea what kind of weapon they usually use, but he could still be beside himself that they actually fought long enough with said weapons to the point they got trapped in them. He also probably just doesn't think highly of none sword weapons.

Its the weapon that they used when they were Ascended. That is the weapon that they choosed.

Renekton would be the Darkin Bat'leth Nasus would be the Darkin Staff Azir would be the Darkin... wand? and Xerath would be the darkin... coffin.... i guess... that would be ironic.

The Darkin chose their weapons for themselves to wield while they were Ascended. Rhaast chose a Scythe, Varus a Bow, and Aatrox a sword. They were bound to said weapons when they became what they became the Darkin officially. I think his comments about the weapons and such are supposed to be jokes. Also, they aren't proper brothers. They stood shoulder to shoulder as equals to defend Shurima before becoming the Darkin. The Ascended call each other "Brother" and "Sister" as a sign of respect.
