Was the source of Shuriman 'ascension' in Vastayan blood?

Think about it, they gained magical powers from one ritual and turned into ANIMALS???? Coincidence??!!

The rite of Ascension was granted to those who were worthy, which was based on the actions one had done for Shurima. Its implied that higher powers were responsible for granting the transformation, so it was probably based solely on a person's merit rather than some distant vastayan heritage.

yes. Shurima is based on ancient egypt. And we havent seen anything to suggest vastay (vastayans? vastai?) in shurima, ancient or modern

I don't think there is any connection between Vastaya and the Ascension. The sun disk seems to channel the energy from the sun during the ascension ritual and I guess some magic is involved there too, but again I doubt that it has to do anything with the Vastaya. Like GreenLore said in another comment: “Not everything animal related has to be Vastaya-related.“
