Can someone explain what the new Varus lore is even about?

I don't get it.

So Val and Kai and Varus are fused. Aaand Varus went on a small killing spree, but Val and Kai overcame the bloodlust and are now in control of Varus.

...then why the fuck is Varus in League of Legends still killing people? Shouldn't he be elsewhere on a peaceful journey to separate/revive themselves like Val and Kai want? (Because you know, Val and Kai are apparently in control now) There's no reason for them to be in League of Legends anymore. The story makes no sense. At all.

What is their new purpose?

TL;DR:

Old Human Varus is gone.
New Darkin Varus was magically sealed in Ionia at the end of the Darkin War in the mountain that would become Pallas.
Enter Kai & Valmar who love each other very much.
Valmar & Kai go to Pallas to Valmar's mom to introduce Kai to her as his heartlight aka loved one.
Kai & Valmar go to pay tribute to the temple in which Varus is contained
Noxians invade.
Kai is mortally wounded, Valmar drags him to the entrance of Varus's prison, thinking the ancient magic will heal Kai.
Both get broken down physically & mentally as Varus' essence merges Kai, Valmar & Varus together in a new body.
Varus escapes from his prison and goes on a killing spree at the Noxians who are still present at Pallas.
Kai & Valmar unite momentarily to seize control from Varus and slow him down.
They all leave Pallas, each with their own goals. Kai & Val want to be normal again, Varus wishes to find his other Darkin brethren.

Val had control of Varus only at the end of the comic. The color text which tells of things happened far after (they're in Shurima) shows that Varus is more than in control of the situation.

They're not in control of him. Except for short stints.

You can argue it is similar to oldVarus. But now it is more flat with no reason or connection.
