Though I’m sure both armies have encountered each other on smaller battles and skirmishes I’d wonder how the battle would play out and which army would have the greater advantage If they were to meet in full force on an even battlefield led by their equally legendary commanders:

Vanguard is significantly stronger as they have more named characters. Even if we didn't see them in the actual game, they are worth 20 people each.

Well unless Draven joins the Legion. Then they win, as a Champion is worth 500 soldiers or something like that.

Those are like the basic anime rules.

C'mon. If we follow anime rules, Draven would be the overconfident low tier villain the hero fights on at the beggining of the story.

And since both sides have a hero to keep the other busy....

If equally matched, with one member of each against the others, the Dauntless Vanguard would win. It's been stated on multiple occasions that Demacia's army is lacking in warriors but elite in skill; they best most other more numerous foes.

If every member of the Dauntless Vanguard fought every member of the Trifarian Legion... it'd be a close fight, and it's hard to say who would win.

Yup, this is the best response. It comes down to quality versus quantity.The Trifarian Legion is extremely skilled, the elite of the elite of Noxus, but that's only relative to the rest of Noxus.

It's not just quality vs quantity - how well does the disparate members of the Trifarian Legion work together? They may be the best-of-the-best Noxus has to offer, but they're from all over the empire. In some cases, culture and fighting styles are not compatible unless extensive training happens. A solid defensive line - like a roman shield wall - could conceivably stave off significant charges by a better armed and more numerous legion if the legion lacks the means to counter the formation.

I'm vaguely seeing something like 300 (despite the movie being generally inaccurate) - obviously not quite so many vs quite so few but the array of different ways the spartans are attacked vs their three main weapons (spear, sword, shield) and the way they change formations and tactics to counter whats being thrown at them.

Who has the best tactics and counter maneuvers to exploit the weaknesses of the other force the best? I would say that Demacia's Vanguard has fewer exploitable weaknesses in technique, while Noxus' Trifarian is probably more fluid and potentially unorthodox in tactics (being able to combine formations and tactics from across the empire). Can Demacia meet those challenges? Again, the answer is that it will be a close fight and no one can be sure who will win.

That would be an excellent short story.

I hope we get big clashes like this in the lore soon. League of Legends is desperately missing some epic storytelling right now, but I think the lore team is headed in that direction.
