Demacia and Noxus are sooo 15th century,

while Bilgewater and Inonia are far closer to the 17th Century. That means that Demacia and Noxus desperately need to modernize or be left behind and destroyed by the supior technology of their counterparts.

What do they need to update though? Their weapons. Look at the cast of Champions from Demacia and Noxus. Not a single one uses a gun. Look at Champions from both Bilgewater and Ionia. Gangplank, gun. Miss Fortune, guns. Jhin, gun. Graves, shotgun. While not all these guns would be common in Bilgewater or Ionia (looking at Whisper here) they do have them, and guns are a game changer when it comes to warfare.

While the archers of these respective nations may actually be better and more effective than someone with an old fashioned gun, guns do have one big advantage. Ease of use. Think about it, an archer must train for most of their lives to develop the skills and musculature to be able to actually weld a war bow. A swordsman has similar problems, not just any dandy can pick up a sword and actually use it properly. A gun however takes very little training to use well. You have to know how to load it, keep it in good condition, how to fire it and how to aim it. That's it. That means armies are suddenly much cheaper to make.

Add onto that guns actually have the potential to peirce metal armor and suddenly heavy armor is no longer that useful.

If Demacia and Noxus want to stay as some of the most powerful nations then they need to start Updating their armies with guns. Oh and cannons. Those are pretty good too.

do they really need to keep up with tech. if you have people that can shoot laser beams and glowing swords, or someone that literally comes back from the dead, weaponry development doesn't need to exist. magic replaces tech in so many cases

You don't have much imagination. The existance of magic throws everything into question.

For example - a bullet might pierce normal armor, but could it pierce armor crafted from dragonscales and enchanted for extra hardness?

The guns in Runeterra are also hextech based, rather than mechanical, so there is a level of functional magic laying underneath.

I've said the same thing before, more or less. The setting doesn't really make sense when looked at academically. Personally, I don't think it's really meant to be. It's more a loose conflation of settings rather than a singular plotted planet.

That didn't go over well with people, but good luck to you.

I will make a few corrections here or there though:

By the 17th century longbows had no real advantage over guns, at all. By then guns could shoot further, as accurately, load faster, and by then guns could be massed produced.

The myth that it takes years to learn how to use a bow is just that, a myth. The Romans started and stopped training in a few dedicated months. Now, to set up your little kingdom to be able to efficiently and spontaneously take up thousands of men as longbowmen, that involved tinkering with the entire kingdom in order to make their common people see it as a sport, like the English did. That took years.

Most warbows were also not English Longbows. English Longbows at their heaviest had a draw weight of around 100 lbs. Most medieval and ancient warbows had a draw weight around 60 lbs. While looking at muscular and skeletal disfiguration we can determine who was an English Longbowman, we cannot tell who was an archer anywhere else in the world.

There is also a bit of silliness going on with what level of tech the champions are showing; Caitlyn's gun for instance I place at least 20th century just being based on the necessary accuracy and distance needed to require the use of 3 magnification sights.

There will also be the argument that this can be explained away by magic and/or hextech. Personally, I think this line of debate is somewhat odd. First, because supposedly magic is rare outside of Ionia and Bandle City (and during the ancient world as seen in Shurima and Ancient Targon), and second because most guns are not Hextech.

But, even if we assume that not all this glorious tech is Hextech, it's all coming from Piltover and Zaun. And considering their factories are creating Industrialization levels of pollution whatever they are building they certainly can make a lot of it. Basically, if they ever felt like expanding their borders against anywhere not either completely filled with magic (like Ionia) or housing an actual godlike being (like Xerath) there shouldn't be much the world would be able to do.

Unless they in turn developed of course, and in Noxus we have seen some of them start to use guns. Good on them.

  2. They are meant to represent 2 medieval nations, one representing knighthood and chivalry and the other a war obsessed nation conquering country.

Anything goes in Noxus they use black magic, guns, explosives anything to get the edge in battle (see kled's released teaser video). They even implored Zaun to remake Urgot (old lore) and hired Singed to invade Ionia and wage chemical warfare, which the Ionians weren't prepared for, in fact it is because of this invasion that the Ionian council released Jhin.

Demacia would however not meddled in magic after the rune wars. But more than likely the majority of their weapons and armor are magical or magically enhanced.(my assumption, look at garen's ult)

Not everywhere can advance at the same pace, technologically, then the story would be boring.

Yeah,Demacia is likely doomed in the long run. Their armies are the most elite of them all,which is likely how they were able to survive until now,but eventually other nations will simply outclass them too much in terms of technology(and its also implied that demacia dislikes magic too,so Lux is more the exception among them,than the rule).

Noxus and ionia on the other hand are trying to catch up with other nations. Ionia built a powerful rifle for Jhin and Noxus is known to work with Zaun and try to get their hands on piltovian technology(some of them also seem to have guns,like Kled),so we know that they are trying to catch up to the more advanced nations.
