How Varus lore could've changed
Riot did a complete change of Varus's lore. Very few elements of the original lore remain. I have a basic outline of how the lore could've have been modernized while still saving more elements of the old lore (and even having the LGBT stuff remain). Let me know what you guys think!
- Valmar is a city guard, Kai is his husband
- flesh out how Valmar and kai met, possibly through quick backflash in discussion with their child
- Valmar often patrols near the temple that houses Varus
- Valmar knows that there is something in Varus's temple that is powerful and shouldn't be messed with (one of my least favourite parts of the new lore is that the temple is not a place of evil, but a place of blessing and offering to something good, which just so happens to also imprison Varus).
- Early one morning, Noxians arrive and Valmar is called into battle. It becomes clear that the Noxian forces are too strong, it is called for a retreat. Valmar gets the idea in his head that he will stay for a valiant last stand to provide time for the people of the town to escape and prevent the Noxians from accessing the power within the temple
- Before his last stand, he goes to make sure his family knows to get out, instead, he finds his home empty. Assuming his family is dead. he goes to the temple, unsure of whether or not he is going to protect it, or use the corrupting power for himself
- He arrives at the temple and soon is met by a few Noxians who came to the temple hoping to find loot
- He fights them and kills them all, in the fury of battle, his need for revenge for his assumedly dead family is awakened
- As he mourns the death of his family, Kai appears! His joy is only short lived as he finds that their son has died.
- More Noxians show up, Kai gets injured in the ensuing fight
- Valmar and Kai get backed up to the temple entrance, Valmar hears Varus calling to him
- In desperation, unable to bear the thought he might lose his husband as well as his son, Valmar answers Varus's call and goes into the temple
- Kai, injured and tired, tries to stop him, pleading with him to not go into the temple. Valmar doesn't listen, insisting that he has to save Kai.
- Valmar grabs the bow, as he does, Kai tries to pull him back, but Varus overwhelms both of them and takes hold.
I like the new Varus lore as a standalone, the story is engaging and is pretty decent lore (not my favourite though). Honestly, it's unlikely that Riot does a revert of Varus's lore again. They felt that it needed modernization and a way to connect to the rest of Runeterra. I think that they could've done something sort of like this, keeping the LBGT aspects and modernizing it, but at the same time keeping the tragedy, the conviction, and other aspects of Varus that called to people who liked his lore and played him before.
I just feel like some of the changes were unnecessary. I get starting from scratch in a full VGU and in cases where the lore was just absolutely terrible. In Varus' case, the lore, though slightly cliched, was workable and could have been modernized, possibly like my outline, without all the change.
