Volibear: Is it just me or.. @Riot
Was Volibear's concept based on the book/movie The Golden Compass? Any sort of influence at all? This question has been on my mind forever.

Yup pretty obvious.
However the general idea of an armored bear actually came from fans.
"Armored Bear" is an old joke stemming back from like, Season 1 boards, where when people would do those "please give me 2 RP" topics Rioters would consistently ask them to "draw a bear". That would usually evolve into "Give the bear armor." or other silly requests.
One of the old devs, the guy Zilean is named after, was famous for being the only one who didn't like the armored bears, which is why Zilean has that Hidden Passive. But yeah, the concept likely owes a lot to the Dark Materials series.
It's kinda obvious. Even in the lore, he challenges the clan leaders to become the chief, just like Iorek fights the bear king to become the leader again.
Man The Golden Compass was an amazing movie! Maybe we should have a small-ish girl with bobcat like creature that is her soul/apart of her and uses it to attack :D
