Can we add back in the line "when consumed by utter darkness, there is nothing left but forward"? It is such an inspirational quote. His prior bio was so powerful and really explained his "why", whereas the new one makes him more of a gatekeeper. "driven by a forgotten betrayal", but what betrayal?

The betrayal part is what you fill in. It can still be the same old lore, or the betrayal could be something different, its just a cheap line to say "Hey, his old lore is still there if you want it".
