Irony of Swain's new title

So after spending the whole patch making Swain my new main and trying to learn the ins and outs of his kit and comparing how it plays out to his lore, I had a bit of a realization. This new Swain is more of the Master Tactician than Old Swain ever was. The Grand General isn't incorrect true, but playing Swain really does make you feel like you're constantly thinking about each move your enemy makes, each move you're going to make, and the benefits and costs of doing so. Will you pull in that CC'd opponent towards you and possibly let them retaliate or just keep them there as peel? Will you use the explosion now for the burst or keep it going in order to gain more heals? Again, I'm not hating the new title, I just thought it was a bit funny. Props to Riot though for making an actually really fun character with such awesome visuals.

Yeah, that’s definitely true. What an irony.

Also

The Grand General refers to the leader of Noxus, but noone sits on the throne now and Swain cannot command anything until Darius or the FaceBlanc agree too, which makes the old title more accurate again.

I think they set out to make him more dark-magey, as they had to focus on one or the other.

But it's true that the cunning aspect was a really interesting part of Swain's old design, so I'm glad it made the transition even though it wasn't, perhaps, their top priority.
