I Really Like Kai'Sa's Personality

You can say she's flat, but her voice lines carry a deep appreciation for earthly life. Way beyond basically any other character other than Ivern. I didn't read a lack of emotion like everyone else did, I read a release of tension. Not everyone coming back from trauma is irrevocably damaged, sometimes it gives you perspective, even if it is extreme. Kai'Sa genuinely sounds like the most well-rounded human being in League even if her personality isn't particularly adventurous.

I can really personally relate to the feeling of taking a deep breath after going through something incredibly harsh. I hope it's not just me projecting my own personal experiences onto a character, it'll be nice to see in a red post what they really are going for.

A deep appreciation for all life... Thanks for your insightful post. Sometimes, the things that just about break us, can make us. Kai'Sa is one of those people. Anger and resentment are heavy burdens. They can slow us down. Although we all respond to adversity in different ways, Kai'Sa has a unique way about her and one that she doesn't want to be lost on those she encounters. Plus, she hasn't been able to talk to anyone for quite a bit, so she likes to practice. GPWP.

Dude, no one is saying she has to be a disheveled wreck. Most people are just saying that she comes across as very boring and lackluster. There is so little emotion or intensity to her. If her thing is "I finally made it back, thank god!" Then that's fine... sell it. Sell the shit out of it. Have lines about how she missed grass or wind or trees. Have her sound determined not to let the void spawn ruin this world like they did their own.

Give her some freaking intensity and emotion. I've heard people say she's supposed to be emotionally muted because she had to kill off her emotions to survive... or that the symbiote deadened them. If so, they undersold that too. She doesn't seem unemotional... she just seems bland. And if her thing is supposed to be relief on being out of the hellscape (even if she's handled it well and isn't crazy... that's perfectly fine) then sell that. She doesn't have any lines that drive home either of those interpretations of her. She just has some basic "back, monster" stuff and some where she bluntly states how she feels or what her purpose is... but in a way that doesn't really sound like she's packing much drive. She's make a terrible inspirational speaker.

She DOES have a line about "I know I'm frightening, but I'm here to help.". And this makes me feel that her hotgirlness was a decision not always intended for her. She does NOT look frightening at all... she looks like a hot girl in a tight catsuit with some goofy wings. Was she supposed to be more alien or monstrous and that was changed along the way? I doubt riot would tell us if that was the case.

I think the problem people have with her is the problem of underselling. Her background is BIG. It implied huge, life-changing crap happened to her. Her ordeal seems like it should have been a powerful thing that influenced everything about her... and that doesn't come across in her design or her VO. Whether she's traumatized, devolved into a monster, emotionally dead, filled with intense willpower and survival instinct or just quietly joyous to be alive none of it conveys well with the performance we got from her. I'm sure her lore story will make some excuses and explain why she is how she is, but it won't make her feel any more interesting, I fear.

Riot has done well with this in the past. They sold the hell out of Sion's berzerker status with occasional lines that he realizes he's become something horrible and he can't escape it. Poppy is a plucky, humble hero and that comes across well. Warwick is a monster trying to remember his humanity through a haze of bloodlust. Swain is a stoic "ends justify the means" sort that will sacrifice anything he needs to if it will further his goals... which he sees as commendable. Riot is usually pretty decent at this.

But Kai doesn't have that kind of performance or passion in her. She doesn't really feel like a character... more like a shadow of one. She doesn't even feel like a character that they meant to to be a shadow of herself after her ordeal. She just seems like she's got no soul to her.

She's refreshingly human.

  • She's not a demon, an aspect, an anthropoid, a manifestation of the seven deadly sins, or a celestial dragon.

  • She's not a genius, a prodigy, a magician, royalty, a hero, or a legend. She's not obsessed/hell bent on vengeance, destruction, artistry, atonement, or balance.

  • She says "damnit!" when she misses a skillshot. She encourages herself. She counts her kills. She's appreciative of her teammates. She feels nostalgic.

She is such a normal human being that it's actually jarring. But that's what so brilliant about her character when you actually think about it - spending years in the void, surviving for years alone to come back as...normal? No tentacles growing out of your face? No mental battle with some creature to see who takes over?? The fact that she's (relatively) normal is a miracle and a testament to how strong, capable, and even fortunate she is while just being a normal human being. This is Lara Croft levels of survival that people aren't seeing. She's probably going to be the most relatable champion in this game by far, and there's no champion that exists like her. I suppose for those of you who can relate to speaking in chimes or time traveling on the weekends, there are champions that already exist like that. Don't worry.

...She has a personality? She's as dull as a board

Posts like this makes me appreciate this character even more, there are things i like about her that i just cant put into words then i find a post like this and see it all there! thank you.

maybe im reading too much into this but there is something about her personality that reminds me of someone who reached a spot in life where they just accept the challenges and harshness of life.they realize its all part of it.like throwing tantrum and being angry has nothing but more pain and misery or as you said someone who just take a deep breath and stand tall! sounds like someone who can move on!

I love Kai’sa’s voice, she isn’t exaggerated like so many other champs

Yeah, I agree with OP. I didn't feel like Kai'Sa was bored or flat, more that she was relaxed, and pondered. In fact, she sounded to me the way an healthy Ionian Champ without trauma should feel, serene and cool headed, more than the survivor of a catastrophe. I don't know if the VO fits with her lore, but I like this VO for itself nonetheless.

Agreed some ppl lack Empathie and Fantasie in that case. I was 3 years hardly depressiv didn't went out very often so I get a monotone mood but sometimes I really wanted to go out and meet ppl so I talked about it wishful as Kai'Sa does about earth and rift.

So imo they did an on point job with her character!

Yes, I love love love it! Thank you, Riot!

The thing with her VO is that it's really hit or miss (for me).

I LOVE this line here:

"The things we carry should lift us up, not weigh us down. Memories, love, and hope are the lightest necessities."

upon respawn.

...I hate that they thought her counting kills all the way up to 25 was a good idea.

I like it how you like her personality while at the same time here in boards there are threads about that she has no personality and they still have more upvotes than you xD
