Did Viktor accidentally create The Church of the Glorious Evolved?

Hello, I've seen a lot of people upset about the mention of this new body in Camille's short story. I understand that many people are worried that Viktor may be subjected to a stereotypical "evil" role. I just wanted to post my own thoughts about this Church and its origins.

I believe that this Church formed indirectly because of Viktor's actions. Viktor wants to improve the lives of people by replacing their body parts with more functional and powerful machinery. It's never said that forces this upon people, so we can infer that perhaps he does it to volunteers. Now imagine those volunteers are poor and sick people. To them, getting a new body part that not only makes their life better, but also gives them hope. Hope that they can continue living in these poor conditions and perhaps get new parts to help make life more bearable. To those people, this is a miracle, and miracles often come from higher powers. It's no surprise that people would want to worship this man who made their lives better.

However, I do not think Viktor is the one who started the Church. Instead, I believe these people he helped, or at least inspired, created it themselves and named it after his "Glorious Evolution". I do not know how Viktor would've reacted to this, but I imagine he'd say something like:

Viktor : "That's...not exactly what I had in mind."

So I don't think Viktor leads this Church. It is just full of people that believe his "Glorious Evolution" is more of a divine calling, rather than a scientific advancement.

As to the identity of the Gray Lady, the Patron deity of this Church, I have no idea. I imagine her identity may be revealed with new stories coming out soon. Someone suggested that perhaps it's Orianna . Because after all, she's one of the few fully artificial life forms in this world. To the Glorious Evolved, she embodies the highest state of being. An almost mechanical Nirvana.

So yeah, that's my thoughts on this. What do you think?

TLDR: Viktor accidentally made a religion by helping people live better. Maybe he approves, maybe he doesn't. But I don't think he's actively involved with them.

What would you think about the theory that the Gray Lady is actually an antropomorfised definition of technology itself? More simpleminded people joining the cult considering the lifesaving augments a miracle, with technology being saviour - the Gray Lady - while some high-ups, possibly the ones actively performing other augmentations, would fulfill the role of pretending to be her to keep everyone in check.

The Evelynn color story implies that GL is a person that actually exists (she calls her responsible for an assassination of a Piltovian clan leader), but it might be as well considered as a swarm mind type of entity; think Anonymous.

Wait, are you saying that Orianna could become connected to Viktor? As in be his first fully augmented human after himself?

I feel the same about this. Good post.

The writer for this lore made a post and pretty much confirmed this is basically what happened. Simple, everyday people see these "miracles" Viktor perform and they misconstrue the meaning of it, which lead to the cult being formed. They don't see the science, they see a man reviving people on the brink of death or making their lives better. They see him replace the weak flesh with metal, and they believe by sacrificing their own flesh at the altars they can reach a higher state of being.

It seems like Camille is the Gray Lady (MY OPINION)

  1. Camille is indirectly referred to as the "Gray Lady"

  2. In the story it says that she gave up her heart/something even bigger for Progress Day, so she might be venerated as the "Gray Lady", a person who, on that historic day, helped augmentation science improve leaps and bounds. So people elected a statue of her just like one might elect a statue of thomas edison in a science lab.

  3. She refers to the newer recruits as "lower than her" and has seen the initiation(cant remember what its actuallly called) plenty of times, which indicates she's probably very high up in the heirachy.

(Camille) OMG, its the Gray Lady. (Orianna) OMG, its the Gray Lady. (some 3rd robot looking person) OMG, its the Gray Lady.

Don't forget to add that while Viktor wants to lead the Glorious Evolution, nothing said he would actively lead the people, so this makes even more sense because he likely just let the people he upgraded go on their way, and they made the Church.

I totally agree with Viktor not being actively involved with the cult.

It's interesting that you say Gray Lady may be Orianna, but I also like the idea that she may be just an idea. Camille seems to be what many people refer to as the Gray Lady, but that doesn't really make sense when the cult views the Gray Lady favorably. Maybe, Gray Lady is more of an urban myth, some sort of a scary augmented/mechanical being. Camille definitely fits, but possibly Orianna as well.
