Worlds Collide: is it the canon explanation for summoners in lore

If you watched the worlds collide video that was shown just before finals, you probably understand where I am coming from, but long story short, each team that came in contact with a nexus fragment took on an ethereal form, which resides inside of the nexus. As players are referred to as summoners, it is likely that this is the new canon on what the summoners are and why they don't have any major impact on world events nowadays. I would like any thoughts and feedback regarding this theory, but until stronger evidence is presented against this, I will accept it as personal headcanon

It's probably just for visual effect. The Nexus is familiar to pretty much everyone who plays, regardless of if they know the lore about it.

Riot's addressed "summoners" in the lore before, they do exist, but they aren't involved with the League or Champions. It's just another type of magic now, like in most fantasy stuff.
