I'm gonna safely assume that our one-eyed hentai-kitten, Vel'Koz, is a Watcher, or maybe a younger iteration of the ancient Watchers trapped in the Freljord.
P.S: That Ryze cinematic is officially one of the best things you guys have produced since 'A New Dawn'. Props to you Riot, you never fail to impress.
Vel koz is not a watcher. The watchers are way different
It was confirmed in the Velkoz AMA that he's not a Watcher, and just a few weeks ago a rioter said this was still the case.

Vel'Koz is not a Watcher, but something to note:
The Watcher in the Ryze cinematic seems to be draining his knowledge about the World Runes. Now, this is kind of wild mass guessing, but it's not improbable that the Watcher was doing that (or sucking out Ryze's power). Vel'Koz kills things for knowledge, right?
I think Vel'Koz is sort of a scout Voidspawn that acts like a mini-Watcher: find knowledge of Runeterra, and take it back to HQ (the Watchers) so they can prepare for invasion.
Currently he's stated as the (Supposed) first Voidborn to ever set foot on Runeterra, but I could definetly see him retconned in to a Watcher. Potentially that or a Voidborn made in their image to serve a much grander purpose than the majority of his kind. Difficult to say what Riot'll do with him there's definetly open options.
Also riot didn;t mention vel'koz as a champion that Ryze interacted with. They only said Sona Nasus Mf and Trundle.
So was this a watcher that fought Ryze for the World Rune or was that Vel Koz?
