if Varus is supposed to be a Darkin, then why is he so different than Aatrox/Rhaast in terms of aesthetics? I mean, Aatrox and Rhaast look like a mix of flesh and metal (?), red and grey tones, while Varus is simply half human, half purple thing.... oh well, yeah, purple demon pants.
I think it was said that the darkin looked vastly different to begin with.
Also they are reshaping their bodies out of human flesh,so I guess it is possible that they can make alterations if they wish to do so.
I guess it kinda falls into the idea that Darkin are the (as it is known to us) Horseman of the Apocalypse. Each ideally being different from the other.

I think that the real answer its because he was not created to be a Darkin in first place.
Imagine if one day, Riot decides to make Ahri, a Targonian Aspect... Of course that she would not look like the rest of them.
That is what happened to Xerath as well, he does not look like the Ascended Brothers because he was not created to be from the same origin. Riot had to create an explanation for that dissonance.
Because noone wants duplicate champions, Kayn's transformation was already too similar to the old Aatrox, its better when they look different and that way it makes the skin designing easier. Just like the yordles look different.
Maybe it's got something to do with being two people instead of one, making Varus the least stable Darkin since they're still fighting back? In reality it's because Vaarus is incredibly forced, but eh

he was originally a Void story champion, then they made him a darkin story champ. but if you want an actual "in lore" explanation, its becasue the darkin soul can't completely possess the body (like how base form kayn has some random demon parts, but isnt fully corrupted) basically Varus isn't a fully formed darkin.. we still dont know what Varus' true darkin form is
